חברת הרכבת BNSF (באנגלית: BNSF Railway Company) היא רשת רכבות המשא הגדולה ביותר בצפון אמריקה ואחת מתשע מסילות ברזל בצפון אמריקה בדרג ראשון. BNSF מונה 41,000 עובדים,[1] 32,500 מיל (52,300 קילומטרים) של מסילות ברזל פרוסות ב-28 מדינות עם יותר מ-8,000 קטרים.[2] יש לחברה שלושה נתיבים חוצי יבשות המספקים קשרי רכבת בין מערב ומזרח ארצות הברית. רכבות BNSF נסעו יותר מ-169 מיליון מיל (272 מיליון קילומטרים) בשנת 2010, יותר מכל חברת רכבות אחרת בצפון אמריקה.[3] היא מהווה חברת הבת התפעולית העיקרית של חברת האם Burlington Northern Santa Fe, LLC. בסיסה בפורט וורת', טקסס. חברת האם של הרכבת היא בעצמה חברה בת בבעלות מלאה של ברקשייר האת'וויי של וורן באפט.[4] החברה עוסקת הובלת מטענים בתפזורת, כולל הובלת די פחם כדי לייצר כ-25% מהחשמל המיוצר בארצות הברית.[5]

היסטוריה

הקמת BNSF החלה עם הקמת חברת החזקות ב-22 בספטמבר 1995. חברת החזקות חדשה זו רכשה את רכבת אטצ'יסון, טופקה וסנטה פה (המכונה לעיתים קרובות "רכבת סנטה פה") ואת רכבת ברלינגטון הצפונית ומיזגה רשמית את שתי החברות הללו ליצירת רכבת ברלינגטון צפון וסנטה פה ב-31 בדצמבר 1996. ב-24 בינואר 2005, שמה של הרכבת שונה רשמית לחברת הרכבות BNSF תוך שמירת ראשי התיבות של השם המקורי (באנגלית: Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway).[6]

ב-3 בנובמבר 2009, ברקשייר האת'וויי של וורן באפט הודיעה שתרכוש את ה-77.4 האחוזים הנותרים ממניותיה של BNSF, תמורת 100 דולר למניה במזומן ובמניות בעסקה בשווי של 44 מיליארד דולר. החברה השקיעה כ-34 מיליארד דולר ב-BNSF תוך רכישת חוב בסך 10 מיליארד דולר.[7] [8][9] [10] [11] ב-12 בפברואר 2010, בעלי המניות של חברת האם Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation הצביעו בעד הרכישה.[12]
