ויליאם ארמסטרונג (באנגלית: William Armstrong‏; 28 ביולי 1822 – 9 ביוני 1914) היה אמן קנדי ואחד האמנים המקצועיים המוקדמים בטורונטו, אונטריו.

ביוגרפיה ועבודה

ויליאם ארמסטרונג נולד בדבלין, אירלנד ב-28 ביולי 1822.[1] הוא למד אומנות באירלנד, והשלים חניכות באנגליה כדי להיות מהנדס רכבות. הוא היגר לקנדה בשנת 1851, התיישב בטורונטו והחל לעבוד ברכבת.[2] הוא מצא שוק ליצירות האמנות שלו עם פרסום החדשות המאוירות שסיקרו את האירועים במושבות. ציורי המים שלו של אירועים וסצנות מקומיות שוחזרו כתחריטי עץ מונוכרום כדי שיוכלו להיכלל בעיתונים השבועיים האלה.

ארמסטרונג הוסיף צילום לכישוריו ובשנת 1855 ייסד את "ארמסטרונג ובאר" עם אחיינו דניאל מנדרס באר (1833–1909). האמפרי לויד הימה (1833–1903) הצטרף אליהם כעבור שנתיים. החברה הייתה אחראית על השלמת רצף פנורמה 360 מעלות של העיר טורונטו בשנים 1856–1857 כדי לתמוך בהצעה של העיר להפוך לבירת קנדה.[3] החברה הפסיקה את פעילותה בשנת 1861.

ארמסטרונג שיווק את כישוריו כשרטט לאלה שהיו מעוניינים להרחיב את קנדה מערבה.[4] החל משנת 1859 ערך ארמסטרונג מספר נסיעות מערבה בליווי משלחות סקר שונות. רישומיו שימשו לדיווח על פעילויות המשלחות וכן על מאפייני השטח והפעילות האנושית שנצפתה.

בשנת 1870 ליווה ארמסטרונג את משלחת ולסלי לאזור רד ריבר, ותיעד את המאמץ הנדרש להעביר את הכוח הצבאי דרך השממה הקנדית. אחת הקומפוזיציות שלו שוחזרה כחריטת עץ על כריכת העיתון "החדשות הקנדיות המאוירות" ב-9 ביולי 1870 כדי ללוות את סיקור התקדמות המשלחת.[5]

הוא זכה בפרסים רבים כאמן בתערוכות בפרובינציות, ועבודותיו הוצגו בתערוכה העולמית בפריז בשנת 1855, ובתערוכה הבינלאומית בדבלין, 1865. הוא הציג עם אגודת האמנים אונטריו והיה חבר באקדמיה המלכותית לאמנויות בקנדה עד 1887, אז התפטר.

בשנת 1864 החל ארמסטרונג ללמד ציור בבית הספר בטורונטו. הוא לימד באוניברסיטת טורונטו בין השנים 1872 - 1877.[6] הוא פרש בשנת 1897 אך המשיך ללמד אמנות בביתו עד מותו.

הוא נפטר בטורונטו ב־9 ביוני 1914.

ארמסטרונג תיאר את תנאי העבודה העגומים במפעלי התעשייה בטורונטו בציור הפסטל שלו "טורונטו רולינג מילס" (1864), המהווה חלק מאוסף ג'יי רוס רוברטסון של הספרייה הציבורית בטורונטו.
