אין חבוש מתיר עצמו מבית האסורים הוא ביטוי שמקורו בתלמוד הבבלי שמשמעותו היא שאדם לא יכול לבצע דברים שנצרכים לו, גם בדברים שהיה יכול לבצע אילו היה צריך לעשותם לחברו. המשל לכך הוא אסיר שאינו יכול לחלץ את עצמו מבית הסוהר.

מקורות הביטוי

ביטוי זה מופיע 3 פעמים בתלמוד הבבלי:

  • במסכת ברכות[1] מסופר על רבי יוחנן שחלה ונזקק לכך שרבי חנינא יתן לו את ידו על מנת להעמידו מחליו. שואלת הגמרא מדוע לא העמיד רבי יוחנן את עצמו מחליו, ומיישבת: "אין חבוש מתיר עצמו מבית האסורים". ואף רבי יוחנן שיכל לרפא חולים אחרים, אינו יכול לרפא את עצמו, אלא הוא זקוק לעזרת אחרים.
  • במסכת נדרים[2] מובא שתלמיד חכם מנדה את עצמו ומפר את הנידוי שנידה את עצמו, ומסבירה הגמרא שהחידוש בכך הוא שאין אומרים כאן "אין חבוש מתיר עצמו מבית האסורין".
  • במסכת סנהדרין[3] מסופר על מלחמתו של דוד המלך עם ישבי בנוב בה השתמש אבישי בן צרויה בשם קדוש כדי להציל את דוד, ומוסבר שדוד עצמו לא יכול היה לומר שם זה משום ש"אין חבוש מוציא עצמו מבית האסורין".

תפילת החולה על עצמו

במדרש רבה מובא שתפילת החולה על עצמו יפה מתפילת אחרים עליו[4]. הקשו על כך כמה ראשונים ואחרונים, הרי בגמרא בברכות נאמר שהחולה אינו יכול להועיל לרפואתו כמו מה שאחרים יכולים לעשות עבורו. החזקוני ורבי אליהו מזרחי תרצו שבדרך כלל אין החולה יכול להתכוון כראוי, ולכן עדיפה תפילת אחרים עליו, אך במקרה בו החולה מצליח לכוון כראוי, תפילתו עדיפה[5].

לעומת זאת המהר"ל והט"ז מחלקים בין עזרה רגילה וסגולה, בה כוחו של אחר יפה מכוחו של החולה, ואילו בתפילה, בה הסיוע מגיע ממרום ולא מכוחו של המתפלל, תפילתו של החולה עדיפה על תפילת אחרים[6].
