אגנס סמפסון (באנגלית: Agnes Sampson; הוצאה להורג ב-28 בינואר 1591[1]) הייתה מרפאה (הילרית) סקוטית ומיילדת שהואשמה בכישוף. הייתה מוכרת בשם "האישה החכמה מקית'".[2] סמפסון הייתה מנאשמות משפט המכשפות בצפון ברוויק בסוף המאה השש-עשרה.

רקע

סמפסון התגוררה בקית', סקוטלנד. היא נחשבה לבעלת כוחות ריפוי ושימשה מיילדת בחברה המקומית.

באביב 1590, המלך ג'יימס השישי חזר מאוסלו אחרי שהתחתן עם אן, בתו של מלך דנמרק-נורווגיה. חצר המלוכה הדני היה עסוק מאוד באותה עת במשפטים כנגד מה שהגדירו כמעשי כישוף ומגיה שחורה, מה שהשפיע, מן הסתם, על המלך הצעיר ג'יימס. במסע המלכותי חזרה מדנמרק היה מזג אוויר קשה וסערות. כמה חודשים אחר כך נערך ציד מכשפות בקופנהגן. אחת הקורבנות הראשונים שלו הייתה אנה קולדינגס, אשר, תחת לחץ, חשפה שמות של חמש נשים אחרות, כולן הודו בגרימת סערות על ידי כישוף, ומשלוח שדים לספינת המלכה אן במסעה, כדי לאיים על שלומה. בספטמבר נשלחו שתי נשים לשריפה כמכשפות בעיר קרוננבורג.[3] המלך ג'יימס שמע את החדשות הללו מדנמרק והחליט להקים בית דין משלו בנושא.

מעצר

בתוך כמה חודשים סערה סקוטלנד במצוד מכשפות. רבות מהן נחקרו על ידי המלך עצמו.

אגנס סמפסון הואשמה על ידי גיליס דאנקן ונעצרה יחד עם אחרות בחשד להשתתפות בגיוס הסערה בים. היא נחשדה בכישוף משום ש"ריפאה אנשים"[דרוש מקור]. יש סברה כי היא ואחרות סומנו על ידי הכנסייה המקומית בשל שימוש בעשבי מרפא.[4] היא עברה עינויים קשים, נקשרה והוכתה, ראשה ושיער גופה גולחו ונבדקו סימני מגע עם השטן בחלקי גופה המוצנעים. בתחילה הכחישה אך בשלב מסוים נשברה והודתה בכל ההאשמות נגדה.

בעיתוני התקופה נכתב כי סיפרה בעדותה באופן חופשי דברים מפלילים ומדהימים על פעולות הכישוף שלה, וכדי לשכנע באמיתות אשמתה אף העידה על תוכן שיחות פרטיות בין המלך הצעיר לכלתו במסעם, באופן שלא הותיר ספק ביכולות הכישוף שלה.[5]

על פי הגרסה הרשמית, המלך ג'יימס לא היה בטוח שאגנס סימפסון אשמה, אך הווידוי האחרון שכנע אותו. סמפסון נלקחה למצודת קסטלהיל, ושם שרפו אותה על המוקד.

הנצחה

יש שמועות כי רוח רפאים המופיעה כגופה העירום והמעונה של אגנס נראתה משוטטת בארמון הולירוד.[6]

דמותה של סמפסון נבחרה על ידי האמנית הפמיניסטית ג'ודי שיקגו לעבודת מיצג בשם "ארוחת הערב". בעבודה, שהועלתה בין השנים 1974–1979, הועלו דמויות של נשים אמיתיות ומיתולוגיות מן ההיסטוריה האנושית, וכן נכתבו שמות 999 נשים נוספות על הרצפה.[7][8]

הועלה מחזה אודותיה, "סימן המכשפה", על ידי טימותי נאוורס, בפסטיבל בלונדון ב-2017.[9]

סמפסון מוזכרת מספר פעמים בספר "צילו של הלילה", מעין סיפור אגדה למבוגרים על מפגש יצורים דמיוניים עם אנשים, שכתבה דבורה הרקנס.
