Star Wars Episode I: Racer הוא משחק וידאו מסוג סימולציית מרוצים שיצא במקור לשווקים בשנת 1999 עבור מערכת ההפעלה Windows ואשר נוצר על בסיס סצנת מרוץ הפודים בסרט "מלחמת הכוכבים - פרק 1: אימת הפנטום". השחקן שולט במשחק בחלליות הפודים בהם ניתן להתחרות במסלולים שונים.

עשרים שנה לאחר יציאת המשחק יצאה לשווקים מהדורה מחודשת של המשחק עם גרפיקה משופרת עבור קונסולות המשחקים נינטנדו סוויץ', פלייסטיישן 4, ו-Xbox One.

משחקיות

המשחק כולל את כל הדמויות שהתחרו זה בזה בסרט אימת הפנטום וכמו גם את מסלול המרוצים בו הסצנה התרחשה בסרט.

המשחק כולל מגוון מסלולים במספר כוכבי לכת שונים. השחקנים מסוגלים לבחור לשחק בכל הדמויות שהתחרו זה בזה בסצנת מרוץ הפודים בסרט אימת הפנטום, בנוסף למספר דמויות חדשות ומקוריות שנוצרו במיוחד עבור המשחק. לכל אחת מהדמויות יש חללית פוד שונה עם חסרונות ויתרונות שונים. חללית הפוד בה משתמש השחקן במשחק מצוידת במבער אחורי אותו השחקן מסוגל להפעיל במהלך המרוץ מספר פעמים על מנת להגביר את המהירות של החללית באופן זמני. השחקן חייב לקחת תמיד בחשבון ששימוש מופרז במבער האחרורי גורם להתחממות יתר של המנוע ולכן אם הוא מופעל במשך זמן רב מדיי המנוע יתפוצץ, והדבר ישבית את חללית הפוד באופן זמני, עד שהיא תהיה מסוגלת לחזור למירוץ. כמו כן, בעת התחרות השחקן צריך לקחת גם בחשבון שחללית הפוד תיהרס אם יגרם לאחד המנועים או לשניהם נזק רב מדיי כתוצאה מכמות גדולה מדיי של התנגשויות בקירות או במכשולים, ולכן השחקן חייב תמיד לנווט בזהירות רבה ככל הניתן במסלול המרוצים. ניתן לתקן את חללית הפוד תוך כדי התחרות, אך צריך לקחת בחשבון שהדבר גורם להאטה של חללית הפוד עד שהחללית מתוקנת לחלוטין.[1]

מצבי המשחק

המשחק מכיל שלושה מצבי משחק:

  • מצב טורניר (Tournament mode) - מצב אשר מאפשר לשחקן להתחרות באליפות על מנת לזכות בהם בפרסים ובאמצעותם לשדרג את חללית הפוד, לגרום לכך שמסלולים חדשים יהפכו זמינים, ובאופן הדרגתי לקבל גישה לדמויות נוספות במשחק.
  • מצב מרוץ חופשי (Free Race mode) - מצב בו השחקן יכול להתאמן בכל אחד מהמסלולים שהפכו זמינים עד כה במשחק ולהתחרות בכל אחד מהדמויות שהפכו זמינים עד כה במשחק. במצב מרוץ חופשי דמות השחקן אינה יכולה לצבור פרסים חדשים או לקבל גישה למסלולים ודמויות חדשים.
  • מצב תחרות בזמן (Time Attack) - במצב זה השחקן מתחרה נגד השעון, וחייב להשיג את הזמן המהיר ביותר בכל מסלול. מצב זה זמין רק בגרסאות של המשחק שיצאו לקונסולות המשחקים והוא אינו זמין בגרסה של המשחק למחשב האישי.

משחק מרובה משתתפים

המשחק כולל גם את האפשרות לקיים משחקים מרובי משתתפים. אפשרות זו שונה בין הגרסה של המשחק למחשב האישי לבין הגרסה של המשחק לקונסולות המשחקים. בגרסאות של המשחק לקונסולות Nintendo 64 ו-Dreamcast ניתן לשחק במצב מרובה משתתפים על אותו המסך במסך מפוצל, ובגרסאות של המשחק למערכות ההפעלה Windows ומקינטוש ניתן לשחק במצב מרובה משתתפים ברשת מקומית (LAN). הגרסה של המשחקים ל־Windows משתמשת בפרוטוקול IPX לצורך כך[2], ובגרסת המקינטוש נעשה שימוש בפרוטוקל TCP/IP לצורך כך. במצב מרובה משתתפים יכולים לשחק עד עד 8 שחקנים.[3]

פיתוח

המשחק פותח במשך קרוב לשנתיים על ידי חברת לוקאס ארטס לפני שהוא יצא לשווקים לבסוף במאי 1999.[4] המשחק יצא במקור למערכת ההפעלה Windows, ובהמשך יצא גם לקונסולות המשחקים נינטנדו 64 ודרימקאסט. בשנת 2020 יצאו גרסאות מחודשות של המשחק עם גרפיקה משופרת לקונסולות המשחקים המודרניות נינטנדו סוויץ',פלייסטיישן 4 ו-Xbox One.

השחקנים ג'ייק לויד ולואיס מקלאוד, אשר גילמו בסרט אימת הפנטום את דמויותיהם של אנאקין סקייווקר וסבולבה, גילמו גם במשחק את אותם התפקידים. ג'ייק לויד עזר לקדם את המשחק בתערוכת E3 של שנת 1999.[5] המשחק כלל גם את הפסקול של הסרט אימת הפנטום ואת האפקטים הקוליים השונים מהסרט.
