קרן הצדקה "Child's Play" הוקמה על ידי ג'רי "טיכו" הולקינס ומייק "גייב" קרהוליק - יוצרי קומיקס הרשת "Penny Arcade" בשנת 2003, לאחר שטור המציג משחקי וידאו כמחנכים ילדים לאלימות ולהרג[1] היה עבורם דיווח מוטה אחד יותר מדי. הקרן התהדרה בתת-הכותרת: "גיימרים נותנים בחזרה", כשהרעיון מאחוריה היה להציג בפני העולם תמונה שונה של קהילת שחקני משחקי הווידאו מזו שסיפקה התקשורת, אשר בעיני הולקינס וקרהוליק הונעה יותר מהרצון להציג אירועים שנויים במחלוקת כדי לעורר עניין בצופים מאשר לדווח את האמת[2].

במקור, פרסמו השניים באתר Penny Arcade קריאה למי שמעוניין לתרום לשלוח משחקים וצעצועים לביתו של מייק. הדבר התברר כטעות כשבמשך כמה ימים רצופים הגיעו שליחי החבילות לביתו של מייק שלוש פעמים ביום, והנהלת הבניין שלו הגישה נגדו תלונה על שמילא שלוש מכולות אשפה שלמות בקרטוני אריזה. בסוף דצמבר, משנגמר מבצע משלוח הצעצועים, העניקו הולקינס וקרהוליק לבית החולים לילדים בסיאטל צעצועים בשווי 250,000 דולר[3].

בינואר 2004 פרסם ביל פראנס, כותב הטור שהניע את הולקינס וקרהוליק לפעולה, טור התנצלות בו הודה לצמד ולכל התורמים[4].

בנוסף לתרומות פרטיות הקרן מקבלת תרומות ממסודות ומארגון תחרויות משחק מחשב דוגמת "Desert Bus For Hope".

בשנת 2006 לראשונה נערכה ארוחה ומכירה פומבית שכול הכנסותיהם הועברו לתרומות. בשנת 2011 לראשונה נערכה תחרות גולף שאורגנה על ידי הקרן. החל משנת 2013 מועברות תרומות לתמיכת ילדים שסובלים מאלימות במשפחה.

עם השנים, נוספו בתי חולים נוספים ברחבי העולם וצמחו התרומות - נכון לקיץ 2021, גייסה הקרן כ-45 מיליון דולר שהועברו לטובת בתי החולים ומוסדות נוספות. בסך הכול התרומות הועברו לכ-190 בתי חולים ברחבי העולם.
