שנהבי ירושלים

שנהבי ירושלים הם קבוצת לוחות שנהב אמנותיים מבירת ממלכת יהודה, ירושלים. הם נמצאו בחניון גבעתי, בבניין המסומן כבניין 100 בשטח 10, שתאריך בנייתו לא וודאי אך הוא נהרס בוודאות בחורבן ירושלים בידי הבבלים.[1] בדיקה מדויקת העלתה שמדובר בשנהב פילים.[2] מספר שברי השנהב שנמצאו הוא כ־1,500 שברים, ולפי מיקומי מציאתם ושחזור מבנהם המקורי הם כנראה עיטרו רהיט מהקומה השנייה של המבנה (שקרסה בחורבן).[3]

המוטיבים האמנותיים על השנהבים מוגבלים לשלושה דגמים עיקריים:[4]

  • מוטיב אחד מופיע על כ־12 לוחות מרובעים (אורך כל צלע כ־5 ס"מ), וכולל מסגרת של 12 רוזטות (פרח, במקרה זה בעל 12 עלי כותרת) חרוטות על רקע צבוע לבן, ובתוך המסגרת עץ תמר מסוגנן כפלמטה (אנ') בעלת חמישה ענפים, מתחתיהם וולוטה בכל צד שמתחת לכל אחד עלה, הכל על גזע משולש.[4] חלק מהרוזטות צבועות באדום וחלק באפור, ענפי הפלמטות צבועים לסירוגין בצבעים כהים ובהירים, הוולוטות בצבע כהה והעלים והגזע בצבע בהיר.[4] לוחות שנהב עם רוזטות התגלו גם בשנהבי שומרון ושנהבי כלח (Kalḫu ivories).[4] העץ המסוגנן הוא מוטיב נפוץ מאוד באמנות הקדומה של דרום מערב אסיה, במיוחד על שנהבים (משומרון, כלח, חדתו, דור שרוכין וסלמיס); עצים מהסגנון הקרוב ביותר לזה שנמצא בירושלים נמצאו על שנהבי כלח ודור שרוכין.[5] העץ המסוגנן מסמל פריון, ומקושר לאלות נקביות ולעיתים גם לאלים זכריים.[6]
  • המוטיב השני הוא אפריז מלבני (גובהו כ־3.15 ס"מ, מאורכו השתמרו לפחות 8.6 ס"מ) ובתוכו שורה של פרחי לוטוס המופיעים לסירוגין כפרח פתוח ומפותח וכניצן סגור.[5] כל פרח כולל שלושה עלי כותרת עגולים המצטמצמים לכיוון הבסיס (בדומה לענפי הפלמטה מהמוטיב הראשון), ושני עלי כותרת מחודדים בצדדים השומרים על רוחבם עד הבסיס.[5] הפרחים כהים יותר מהרקע. גם הלוטוס הוא מוטיב נפוץ באמנות השנהב של דרום מערב אסיה (שומרון, כלח, חדתו ודור שרוכין), אך לרוב כל עלי הכותרת מחודדים; בשומרון נמצא לוח אחד שגם בו חלק מעלי הכותרת מעוגלים, אך הצורה הקרובה ביותר לצורת הלוטוסים הייחודית מירושלים נמצאה על לוחית עצם מ־Tel ‘Ira שבנגב.[5]
  • המוטיב השלישי הוא אפריז צר וארוך (גובהו 8 מ"מ, מאורכו השתמרו כ־2.3 ס"מ) הכולל מין גדר מסורגת ועיגולים שתוכם הצטלבות X בנקודות המפגש של הקווים המסורגים.[7] הרקע נצבע בשחור.[7] סריג כמעט זהה נמצא בכלח.[7]

עדויות חומריות על הלוחיות מעידות שהיו מיועדות להיות מודבקות וממוסמרות לחפץ כלשהו, אך עבודת ההצמדה המעט מרושלת מעידה על כך שנעשתה בידי אומן מקומי חסר הכשרה מספקת, או שנפלו והודבקו שנית.[8]

אמנות שנהב, כעיטורי רהיטים וקופסאות, פריטי לבוש טקסיים, וחפצים קטנים אחרים, היו סמל נחשב ליוקרה במזרח הקדום. עם זאת, למעט אוסף שנהבי שומרון והשנהבים הלבנטיניים שנמצאו בארמונות אשוריים לאחר בזיזתם, ערי דרום הלבנט לא סיפקו עדויות משמעותיות לצריכת שנהב בתקופת הברזל.[9] לאור זאת, העדות מירושלים בהקשר של ראשית המאה ה־6 לפנה"ס בולטת.[9]
