ריצ'רד ארט סמולי (באנגלית: Richard Smalley;‏ 6 ביוני 1943 – 28 באוקטובר 2005) היה כימאי אמריקאי, זוכה פרס נובל לכימיה לשנת 1996 ביחד עם הארי קרוטו ורוברט קורל, על גילוי הפולרן.

ביוגרפיה

ריצ'רד סמולי נולד ב-6 ביוני 1943 באקרון שבאוהיו, כצעיר מבין ארבעה אחים וגדל בקנזס סיטי שמיזורי. בשנת 1965 סיים קורל את התואר הראשון באוניברסיטת מישיגן, ובשנת 1973 הפך לדוקטור באוניברסיטת פרינסטון. את הפוסט-דוקטורט עשה סמולי באוניברסיטת שיקגו בשנים 1973–1976. בשנה זו הצטרף לאוניברסיטת רייס ובשנת 1990 מונה לפרופסור. בשנה זו הצטרף סמולי לאקדמיה הלאומית למדעים ובשנה שלאחר מכן לאקדמיה האמריקאית לאמנויות ולמדעים.

בשנת 1996 זכה סמולי במדליית פרנקלין.

סמולי נפטר מלוקמיה בגיל 62 ב-28 באוקטובר 2005 במרכז מ' ד' אנדרסון לסרטן באוניברסיטת טקסס ביוסטון אשר בטקסס.
