ריצ'רד יואן בורכרדס (באנגלית: Richard Ewen Borcherds; ‏נולד ב-29 בנובמבר 1959) הוא מתמטיקאי בריטי המתמחה בתורת המספרים, בתורת החבורות ובאלגברות מממד אינסופי.

ביוגרפיה

בורכרדס נולד בקייפטאון והתחנך בבית הספר "המלך אדוארד" בברמינגהאם ובאוניברסיטת קיימברידג', שבה למד אצל ג'ון הורטון קונוויי. בגיל 18, בשנת 1977, הוא זכה במדליית כסף באולימפיאדת המתמטיקה הבינלאומית. בשנת 1978 זכה בה במדליית זהב.[1] לאחר שקיבל תואר דוקטור, עבד בקיימברידג' בתפקידים שונים ובאוניברסיטת קליפורניה בברקלי כפרופסור למתמטיקה.

בשנת 1998, בקונגרס הבינלאומי של המתמטיקאים ה-23 בברלין, הוענקה לו מדליית פילדס. הפרס הוענק לו "עבור תרומותיו לאלגברה, לתורת התבניות האוטומורפיות ולפיזיקה המתמטית, לרבות גילויים באלגברות הקודקודים ואלגברות לי, הוכחת משפט ה'מונשיין' של קונוויי-נורטון, וגילוי סוג חדש של מכפלות אוטומורפיות אינסופיות".

לאחר זכייתו בפרס, התראיין על ידי סיימון סינג לעיתון הגארדיאן. בראיון סיפר בורכרדס שהוא משער שיש לו תסמונת אספרגר. בורכרדס ומשפחתו הסכימו לעבור סדרת ראיונות ומבחנים אצל חוקר האוטיזם סיימון בארון-כהן, שאישר שלבורכרדס מאפיינים רבים מתחום קשת האוטיסטית אך לא ניתן להגדיר אותו כלוקה בתסמונת.
