סטרייט אדג' (Straight edge, SxE, sXe או אדג') הוא סגנון חיים, או במובן אחר תנועה חברתית, המשויכת לזרם ההארדקור פאנק במוזיקה. האנשים המשויכים לתנועה, המכונים "סטרייט אדג'רים", נמנעים מטבק, אלכוהול וסמים. בנוסף, רבים מהם נמנעים מקפאין ומהפקרות מינית ודוגלים בשוויון ובצמחונות או בטבעונות.

אטימולוגיה

על אף העובדה שרבים מעקרונותיה של תנועת הסטרייט אדג' מקורם בתקופות מוקדמות יותר, מקור השם עצמו בשיר "Straight edge" של להקת מינור ת'רט, שהוקלט בשנת 1981. המילים לשיר, שנכתבו על ידי סולן הלהקה, איאן מק'קיי, מביעות מחאה בנוגע לשימוש בסמים פסיכואקטיביים בקרב להקות רוק.

פזמון השיר מורכב מהמשפט "I've got the straight edge" שחוזר מספר פעמים. השיר הוא באורך של כ46 שניות בלבד.

איאן מק'קיי הסביר את המשפט באמרו שבכך שהוא נמנע משימוש באלכוהול ובסמים, יש לו יתרון על אלו שכן משתמשים בהם. המילה "Edge" היא מילת סלנג שמשמעותה "יתרון".

למרות שהתנועה אינה משויכת בצורה רשמית לאף תפיסה חברתית או פוליטית, רבים מחבריה מזדהים עם אנרכיזם, סוציאליזם, אתאיזם, מודעות לאיכות הסביבה, צמחונות, טבעונות ותנועות אקולוגיות שונות. "יום האדג' הבינלאומי" נחגג ב-17 באוקטובר.

סטרייט אדג'ר מפורסם הוא המתאבק פיליפ ברוקס הידוע בדמותו CM פאנק, שמתאבק בארגון WWE.

סימן ה-X

האות X הוא הסימן המוכר ביותר של זרם הסטרייט אדג', ופעמים רבות הוא מסומן על גב שתי כפות הידיים, אולם הוא גם יכול להיות מסומן על חלקי גוף אחרים. ניתן למצוא את הסימן פעמים רבות גם על פרטי לבוש. ה-X שימש כאזהרה לברמנים בהופעות שלא יגישו משקאות אלכוהוליים לחברי הלהקה שנמנעים מכך. מאוחר יותר הדבר הפך לאופנה בקרב צעירים שרצו להיכנס להופעות אך לא לשתות אלכוהול שמוגש בהופעות. בשנת 1980 הוציאה לאור להקת "The Teen Idles" תקליט הנקרא "Minor Disturbance" כאשר עטיפת התקליט הייתה שתי ידיים עם X שחור מסומן על גבן. הסימן הפך במהרה לחלק בלתי נפרד מזרם הסטרייט אדג'.
