סולם מוס

סולם מוֹס הוא סולם בן עשר דרגות למדידת קשיות של מינרלים. קשיות המינרל נמדדת במידת ההתנגדות שלו לחריצה על ידי מינרל אחר. סולם מוס נערך על ידי המינרלוג הגרמני פרידריך מוס (Friedrich Mohs) בשנת 1812, והוא המקובל ביותר בין כמה הגדרות קיימות למדידת קשיות של חומרים.

מוס ערך את הסולם בן 10 הדרגות על פי עשרה מינרלים זמינים, החל במינרל הרך ביותר - טלק (שדרגת הקשיות שלו 1) ועד למינרל הקשה ביותר - יהלום (שדרגת הקשיות שלו 10). חומרים נמדדים כנגד הסולם באמצעות איתור החומר הקשה ביותר שהם מסוגלים לחרוץ.

הטבלה דלהלן מראה השוואה עם קשיות מוחלטת כפי שנמדד על ידי סקלרומטר (מכשיר הבודק קשיות). אין בין דרגות הקושי המובאות בסולם מוס קשר מתמטי שיטתי. לדוגמה קורונדום (במקום התשיעי) קשה פי שניים מטופז (שבמקום השמיני) אך יהלום קשה מקורנדום פי ארבעה.

סטודנטים לגאולוגיה לומדים את סולם מוס באמצעות המנמוניקה:" The Girls Can Flirt And Other Queer Things Can Do" שבה האות הראשונה בכל מילה מייצגת את המינרל המתאים בטבלה.

משמעות הנתונים בטבלה היא לדוגמה שגבס שדרגת קשיותו גבוהה מטלק יחרוץ בטלק. דרגת הקשיות של חומר שחורץ מינרל מסוים המצוי בטבלה, אך נחרץ על ידי מינרל המצוי מקום אחד מעליו בטבלה היא ביניהם. כך למשל לציפורן בכף היד דרגת קשיות 2.5, לסכין דרגת קשיות 5.5, ולזכוכית - 6-7.

הטבלה המקורית שנכתבה על ידי מוס כללה רק עשרה מינרלים, אך הורחבה מאז. מאחר שמוס הגביל את הסולם לעשרת המספרים הטבעיים הראשונים, הערכים שניתנו למינרלים אלו עשויים לכלול 2 ו-3 ספרות מעבר לנקודה העשרונית.
