מתתיהו רוטנברג (כ"ג בתשרי ה'תרצ"א, אוקטובר 1930 - ז' בטבת ה'תשכ"ה, 30 בדצמבר 1965) היה מנהל "המרכז לחינוך דתי" של המזרחי והפועל המזרחי, והמזכ"ל הראשון של תנועת בני עקיבא.

ביוגרפיה

נולד בשמחת תורה ה'תרצ"א בסצ'ובצה (אנ') שבצ'כוסלובקיה לאליקים גצל רוטנברג ודבורה לבית לנקנברג. למד בבית הספר היהודי בעיירה עד הכיבוש הנאצי. ב-1944 נשלח לאושוויץ, שם נרצחו הוריו ואחותו. בדרך לא דרך הבריחה אותו דודתו חזרה להונגריה, שם שהה עד תום המלחמה. לאחר המלחמה למד כשנה בישיבה בניטרה, ועלה לארץ כמעפיל באונייה "החייל העברי", שנוסעיה נעצרו במחנה עתלית. למד בחוות סג'רה ומשם עבר למדור הדתי במקוה ישראל. במהלך מלחמת העצמאות שהה בבארות יצחק והשתתף בקרב על הקיבוץ. לאחר קום המדינה למד בסמינר למדריכים דתיים של עליית הנוער בבית וגן, ושימש כמדריך נוער בחוות סג'רה, בגבעת וושינגטון ובמקווה ישראל. התגייס לנח"ל לגרעין "עציון". משנת ה'תשי"ג היה חבר ההנהלה הארצית ורכז מחלקת ההדרכה ומחלקת יישובי העולים של בני עקיבא. מספר שנים לאחר מכן החל לשמש כמזכיר הכללי של בני עקיבא, למשך כעשור. ביוזמתו ובדחיפתו, החלה בני עקיבא לעסוק גם בקליטה חלוצית-חברתית-דתית של נוער עולה, בעיקר מארצות המזרח[1][2]. היה חבר מרכז ישיבות בני עקיבא (במסגרת זו היה ממייסדי אולפנת כפר פינס) וחבר המזכירות העולמית של בני עקיבא (במסגרת זו השתתף בכנסי נוער בינלאומיים[3] ונשלח לריכוזים יהודיים בגולה[4]). משנת 1963 היה מנהל המרכז לחינוך דתי[5].

למד סוציולוגיה ומדעי המדינה בשלוחה התל אביבית של האוניברסיטה העברית[6].

רוטנברג לא נישא מעולם. נפטר לאחר מחלה ממושכת ב-30 בדצמבר 1965, בגיל 35. נקבר בבית הקברות קריית שאול[7].

הנצחתו

לזכרו הוקמו ספרייה למדריכים ומרכזייה בבית בני עקיבא בתל אביב, שרוב הספרים שבה הגיעו מספרייתו של רוטנברג עצמו[8] ובית כנסת לנוער בבאר שבע[9]. כמו כן, במלאת שנה לפטירתו יצא לזכרו ספר זיכרון "נר למתתיהו".
