סֵר דויד ר. קוקס (באנגלית: George Edward Pelham Cox‏; 15 ביולי 1924 – 18 בינואר 2022) היה סטטיסטיקאי בריטי. עבודותיו של קוקס עסקו בתחומים רבים, ובהם ניתוח נתונים איכותיים, ניתוח השרדות ותכנון ניסויים.

ביוגרפיה

קוקס נולד בעיר ברמינגהאם באנגליה. הוא למד מתמטיקה בקולג' סנט-ג'ון באוניברסיטת קיימברידג'. לאחר מכן למד באוניברסיטת לידס, וב-1949 קיבל תואר דוקטור לסטטיסטיקה. בין 1944 ל-1946 עבר במכון המחקר של חיל האוויר המלכותי, ולאחר מכן במכון המחקר של תעשיית הצמר. בין 1956 ל-1966 היה מרצה, ולאחר מכן פרופסור לסטטיסטיקה במכללת בירקבק באוניברסיטת לונדון. ב-1966 היה לראש החוג לסטטיסטיקה באימפריאל קולג' בלונדון, ומאוחר התמנה לתפקיד ראש המחלקה למתמטיקה שם. בין 1966 ל-1991 היה העורך של כתב העת ביומטריקה. ב-1988 מונה לנאמן בקולג' נופילד באוניברסיטת אוקספורד והיה לחבר המחלקה לסטטיסטיקה שם. הוא פרש רשמית מתפקידיו ב-1994.

הכרה מקצועית ופרסים

קוקס זכה לפרסים רבים, החשוב שבהם הוא הפרס הבינלאומי לסטטיסטיקה, שהוענק לו ב-2017. הוא היה הזוכה הראשון בפרס זה. כמו כן, הוא היה עמית החברה המלכותית לסטטיסטיקה, וזכה במדליית הכסף על שם גאי המוענקת מטעם החברה ב-1961, ובמדליית הזהב ב-1973. ב-1973 נבחר לעמית של החברה המלכותית של לונדון, זכה לתואר אבירות מידי המלכה אליזבת השנייה בשנת 1985 ונבחר לעמית כבוד של האקדמיה הבריטית בשנת 2000. כמו כן היה חבר באקדמיה הלאומית למדעים של ארצות הברית. בשנת 1990 זכה בפרס קטרינג למחקר הסרטן עבור פיתוח מודל הסיכונים הפרופורציונליים. ב-2005 זכה במדליית ג'ורג' בוקס. בשנת 2010 הוענק לו מדליית קופלי של החברה המלכותית על תרומתו המכוננת לתיאוריה וליישומי הסטטיסטיקה. בשנת 2016, הוא זכה בפרס חזית הידע של קרן BBVA בקטגוריית מדעי היסוד ביחד עם בראדלי אפרון, לפיתוח שיטות סטטיסטיות "חלוציות ובעלות השפעה עצומה" שהוכחו הכרחיות להשגת תוצאות אמינות בספקטרום עצום של דיסציפלינות מרפואה ועד אסטרופיזיקה, גנומיקה או פיזיקת חלקיקים.
