בס (באנגלית: Bass או Bottom end)[2] הוא צליל בתדר נמוך, בגובה צליל ומנעד של 16–256 הרץ (C0 עד אמצע C4), כאשר כלי בס הוא כלי מוזיקלי המפיק צלילים במנעד של C2 – C4.

צליל זה, כאשר מנוגנן בהרכבים מוזיקליים, כגון תזמורות, מספק קונטרפונקט או מלודיה הרמונית נגדית המדגיש את הקצב או את האקורדים של המנגינה.

במוזיקה פופולרית, חלק הבס של בייסליין מספק בדרך כלל תמיכה הרמונית וקצבית להרכב המוזיקלי. נגני הבס, ביחד עם המתופפים, נגני גיטרת הקצב (אנ'), ובמקרים מסוימים גם נגני כלי המקלדת (כגון פסנתר או אורגן האמונד) אחראים על גזרת הקצב של ההרכב המוזיקלי. נגני הבס מדגישים את המקצבים החזקים וכן את השורש או החמישית של האקורד בבסליין (ובמידה פחותה גם שליש האקורד).
