Subdivisións de Gales

A proposición do goberno local galés, Gales divídese en 22 autoridades unitarias (unitary authority areas), responsabeis de todos os servizos do goberno local, incluíndo educación, servizos sociais, medio ambiente e estradas. E ademais, por debaixo delas, nalgunhas zonas hai tamén community councils (Concellos), encargados dalgunhas áreas específicas dentro deses "Concellos". Aínda que o termo "autoridades unitarias" é o oficial e designado polo goberno galés, na práctica en Gales case nunca son nomeados dese xeito. Nas Autoriades Unitarias atópanse tres tipos distintos: nove conunties (condados), tres cidades e dez county boroughs (distritos); aínda que todos eles dispoñen do mesmo grao de poder. Todos os medios de comunicación, incluíndo a BBC Wales, refírense ás autoridades unitarias como condados. Estas autoridades unitarias creáronse no ano 1996 a través da Local Government (Wales) Act 1994.

A raíña nomea un Lord Lieutenant para que a represente nos oito Preserved counties of Wales, que son unha combinación dos anteriores condados. Porén, outras subdivisións apareceron cando se dividiu o territorio galés para o repartimento dos servizos de bombeiros e policía.

Cidades

Hai cinco cidades en Gales: xunto coas tres Autoridades Unitarias que teñen ese status, os concellos de Bangor e St Davids tamén acadaron o status de cidade. O status de cidade acádase mediante o Letters patent.

Todas as autoridades unitarias coñécense como condados, agás a cidade de Newport, as cidades e condados de Cardiff, a cidade de Swansea (marcados cun *), e os county boroughs (marcados cun †).
