Ovíparo

Eclosión dun ovo de tartaruga.

Dise que é ovíparo (do latín ovum, "ovo", e parire, "parir") un animal cuxa modalidade de reprodución inclúe o depósito de ovos no medio externo onde completa o seu desenvolvemento antes da eclosión.

Son ovíparos a maioría dos insectos e outros invertebrados, os peixes, os anfibios e os réptiles, así como a totalidade das aves. Entre os mamíferos só son ovíparos os monotremas (o ornitorrinco e as equidnas).

Os animais que producen ovos secos que son postos ao aire, como réptiles ou insectos, deposítanos despois de seguir un procedemento de fecundación interna; o ovo, nestes casos, está protexido por unha cuberta ou casca. Os que os poñen na auga (peixes, crustáceos, anfibios,...) depositan ovos sen fecundar (óvulos); a fecundación prodúcese cando o macho verte o seu esperma sobre os ovos mentres que a femia os vai depositando (fecundación externa).

Dicimos que unha especie é ovípara cando as súas femias poñen ovos.

Cada especie ovípara de vertebrados terrestres varía en canto á produción de ovos; así, por exemplo, as tartarugas mariñas producen entre 70 e 190 ovos, mentres que as aves poden producir ovos por baixo das dúas ducias.

Denomínase oviparidade á condición de ser ovíparo.
