Fusion

A fusion (ou jazz-rock fusion ou jazz fusion) é un xénero musical que mestura elementos do jazz con outros estilos musicais, particularmente rock, funk, R&B, música electrónica e músicas folclóricas. Os álbums de fusión (incluso os feitos polo mesmo artista) acostuman incluír varios destes estilos musicais.

A finais dos 1960, os músicos de jazz comezaron a mesturar as formas e as técnicas interpretativas do jazz cos instrumentos eléctricos do rock e os ritmos do soul e o R&B. Ó mesmo tempo, algúns artistas de rock comezaron a incluír elementos do jazz á súa música. Os 70 foron a década da fusión, mais o estilo seguiu vivo até hoxe. Máis ca coma un estilo musical codificado, a fusión pode verse coma unha tradición ou aproximación musical. A unha parte do rock progresivo tamén se lle chama fusión.

A fusión é tipicamente instrumental, adoito con compases e ritmos complexos e temas moi longos, incluíndo longas improvisacións. Moitos dos máis eminentes músicos de fusión combinan un grande virtuosismo con complexas composicións e a improvisación en métricas raramente vistas noutras formais musicais occidentais. Entre compositores de jazz máis recoñecidos neste estilo atópanse Dave Brubeck e Don Ellis.

A fusión non recibe moita difusión nos medios tradicionais, posiblemente debido á súa complexidade, á falta de voces e á lonxitude usual dos temas. Aínda así no Xapón, Suramérica e, sobre todo, en Europa ten moita máis acollida do que en Norteamérica (onde é máis comunmente coñecido coma jazz rock).
