Fermina Oliva Ocaña, nada en Uclés (Cuenca) o 12 de outubro de 1872[1] e finada en Madrid o 28 de marzo de 1969, foi unha dos dez pasaxeiros españois que embarcaron no famoso transatlántico RMS Titanic en abril de 1912. Fermina Oliva era a dama de compañía do millonario matrimonio español conformado por Víctor Peñasco Castellana (finado a bordo do barco) e a súa dona María Josefa Pérez de Soto Vallejo Peñasco (que sobreviviu ao afundimento, e finou en 1972 aos 83 anos).[2]

Traxectoria

Cando era moi nova Fermina marchou da súa vila natal e cara a Madrid, para axudar á súa familia.[1] Alí, estableceuse como modista e máis tarde ofrecéronlle ser a dama de compañía do matrimonio Peñasco, durante a súa viaxe de noivos.[1] Os Peñasco casaron en 1910 e querían realizar unha luxosa lúa de mel que duraría máis de dous anos.

A bordo do Titanic

O 10 de abril de 1912 en Cherburgo, Fermina Oliva embarcou no Titanic xunto cos Peñasco.[3] O matrimonio e Fermina ocupaban tres camarotes de primeira clase. A noite do afundimento, Fermina atopábase no seu camarote cosendo o seu corsé e non podía conciliar o soño.

Pouco antes da medianoite do 15 de abril de 1912, Fermina notou a sacudida provocada polo choque do transatlántico co iceberg. Ao pouco tempo Víctor acudiu a chamala, e subiu co matrimonio a cuberta, onde lles dixeron que o accidente non se trataba de nada grave. Pero o tempo pasaba e, pasada a medianoite, comezaron a baixar os primeiros botes salvavidas. Josefa subiu no bote nº 8, pero Víctor cedeulle o seu sitio a unha muller de terceira clase cun bebé en brazos. O bote comezou a baixar, e Fermina, presa do medo de estar nun buque afundíndose e rodeada de xente que non falaba o seu idioma, empezou a chorar e a gritar, ante o cal un oficial arroxouna ao bote, onde se reuniu coa súa señora.

Na mañá do día 15 de abril, Fermina e a súa señora subiron a bordo do RMS Carpathia.

Últimos anos

Logo desa experiencia, Fermina Oliva non quixo volver falar deste triste feito, e volveu á súa vida de costureira, na súa casa da rúa Regueros de Madrid, que máis tarde convertería nunha pensión. Sempre foi solteira e non tivo fillos. Faleceu o 28 de marzo de 1969, á idade de 96 anos,[3] e foi soterrada no Cemiterio de La Almudena.
