Facultade

Unha facultade é unha institución docente de estudo e investigación que normalmente constitúe unha subdivisión dunha universidade. Abrangue unha área de estudo concreta ou un conxunto de áreas relacionadas.[1] A antiga Universidade de París, que serviu de modelo para a maioría das universiades medievais de Europa, tiña catro facultades: Teoloxía, Leis, Medicina e Artes. Todos os alumnos tiñan que graduarse nunha delas para poder proseguir os estudos noutra das tres restantes.

As facultades deben o seu nome ó feito de que teñen a atribución ou potestade legalmente recoñecida de outorgar graos académicos, o cal supón que son consideradas autoridades cualificadas para certificar a calidade da formación e os coñecementos dos seus propios titulados. Os graos académicos que outorga unha facultade poden ser de licenciatura ou enxeñaría, de mestría e especialmente, o de doutoramento. Tamén poden ofrecer diplomaturas. Antigamente outorgaban tamén o grao de bacharelato, que era un grao académico até certo punto semellante á actual diplomatura. Nalgunhas universidades, como a UNAM de México, os centros docentes que non teñen programas de doutoramento son chamadas escolas, reservando o nome de facultade para aqueles que si o teñen.
