Zhong Kui (chinois simplifié : 钟馗 ; chinois traditionnel : 鍾馗 ; pinyin : Zhōng Kuí ; en coréen : Jong Gyu (hangul: 종규) ; en japonais : Shō Ki ; en vietnamien : Chung Quỳ) est un exorciste légendaire de Chine.

Il est souvent représenté dans l'art japonais. Il y apparaît barbu, armé d'une longue épée et portant parfois un large chapeau de paille. Ce héros combat et met à mort des oni (diables japonais).

À Taïwan et dans le sud du Fujian, à la fin de certaines cérémonies de la fête des fantômes, on demande parfois à un maître taoïste ou à un acteur incarnant Zhong Kui armé d’une épée, d’exécuter une danse censée chasser les esprits maléfiques. Traditionnellement, ce spectacle était considéré comme dangereux pour le public ordinaire qui partait avant son exécution.

Dans le monde chinois, Zhong Kui apparaît parfois en dieu protecteur sur les portes.

Légende

Selon la tradition chinoise, c’était un jeune homme doué pour les études mais fort laid vivant sous la dynastie Tang. Il se rendit une année aux examens impériaux avec son ami Du Ping (杜平) et arriva en tête du concours. Cependant, lors de l’entrevue que les lauréats devaient avoir avec l’empereur, ce dernier le jugea trop laid pour occuper une fonction publique et annula son titre de bachelier. De dépit, Zhong Kui se jeta tête la première contre les marches du palais et en mourut. L’empereur lui offrit à titre posthume une robe de fonctionnaire et le roi des Enfers le nomma chef des fantômes en compensation. Pour remercier Du Ping qui avait organisé ses funérailles, Zhong Kui revint sur terre la veille du Nouvel an pour arranger un mariage entre lui et sa sœur, épisode évoqué dans l’opéra de Pékin, Zhong Kui marie sa sœur (鍾馗嫁妹).

La première mention littéraire connue de ce personnage se trouverait dans l’Histoire non officielle des Tang (唐逸史), ouvrage perdu datant de la dynastie Song. L’empereur Tang Xuanzong, malade, aurait vu dans un cauchemar un démon voler une de ses flûtes et la bourse brodée de la favorite Yang Guifei. Un démon plus grand portant une coiffe de mandarin serait alors apparu et aurait fait fuir le premier après lui avoir arraché un œil qu’il aurait avalé. Il se serait alors présenté comme Zhongkui de Nanshan (aujourd'hui Zhong Nanshan (zh), 终南山, à Xi'an, dans la province du Shaanxi), ayant juré de débarrasser l’empire des influences néfastes. L’empereur se réveilla guéri et ordonna au peintre officiel Wu Daozi de faire le portrait de l’esprit exorciste, et d’en faire placer un sur la porte de sa chambre à coucher. Encore au XIX^e siècle, Zhong Kui apparaît parfois sur les portes en dieu protecteur.

Origine ancienne

Le mythe de Zhong Kui aurait des origines plus anciennes que la dynastie Tang. Selon les érudits Yang Shen (杨慎, 1488-1559), Gu Yanwu (顧炎武, 1613-1682) et Zhao Yi (zh) (赵翼, 1727-1814), le nom du personnage serait une variante graphique de zhong kui (终葵 / 終葵, zhōngkuí), un objet rituel d’exorcisme, dont le nom serait l’expansion disyllabique de zhui (椎), bâton servant à chasser les esprits, selon des livres anciens comme le Zhouli. Selon le folkloriste taïwanais Hu Wanchuan (胡萬川), le personnage de Zhong Kui serait lié aux traditions chinoises anciennes de l’exorcisme nuo, dans lequel des jeunes gens déguisés expulsaient les mauvaises influences du palais lors de la période du Nouvel An chinois.
