De manière générale, par définition, la valeur intrinsèque d’un bien, d'un service, d'un savoir[1], d'un savoir-faire[1], de la vie... qualifie la valeur de cette chose en elle-même (valeur culturelle, valeur éthique, valeur intrinsèque d'une donnée...), que cette chose permette ou non de satisfaire des besoins et préférences personnels ou d'un groupe[2]. Cette notion s'oppose à celle de valeur extrinsèque (ex : valeur d'usage, valeur marchande ou d'échange), anthropocentrée[3].

Selon le contexte, le terme valeur intrinsèque peut, plus précisément faire référence à :

  • la valeur intrinsèque dans le champ de la philosophie ou de la sociopsychologie (ex valeur intrinsèque positive du plaisir ...avec son pendant négatif, la douleur pour laquelle Harman & al. (1994) parlent de valeur intrinsèque négative)[8] ;
