Théodore Lack est un pianiste et compositeur français né à Quimper le et mort à Paris, le .

Biographie

Musicien précoce, Lack est nommé organiste de l'église de son village à l'âge de dix ans. À quatorze ans, il entre au Conservatoire de Paris, où il étudie le piano avec Marmontel, l'harmonie avec Bazin et la théorie avec Lefébure-Wely. Diplômé du Conservatoire à dix-huit ans, il y est nommé professeur assistant de piano et conserve ce poste pendant cinquante-sept ans (1864-1921), jusqu'à sa mort, sans jamais quitter Paris.

Il a écrit de nombreuses pièces de salon pour piano (Tarentelle, Boléro, Études élégantes, Valse espagnole, Scènes enfantines, Souvenir d'Alsace, Polonaise de concert, etc.).

Il se chargea d'annoter et doigter les recueils Les classiques favoris qui furent édités en 1916 (peut-être même avant) et qui sont toujours de nos jours utilisés par les étudiants pianistes. Il édita d'autres recueils de partitions pour les pianistes débutants, par exemple Mademoiselle Didi. C'est pour sa Méthode de piano (éd. Leduc, 1909) que Debussy a composé une pièce de style ragtime The Little Nigar, avec comme sous-titre « Cake-Walk ». Debussy le complètera et le reprendra dans Children's corner sous le titre Golliwogs' cakewalk.
