Teint olive

Le teint olive est un teint de peau correspondant approximativement aux types III, IV et V de l'échelle de pigmentation de Fitzpatrick[1],[2],[3],[4]. Ce terme décrit des tons bruns clairs avec des nuances verdâtres, jaunâtres ou dorées, comme un teint clair[5],[6],[7],[8],[9],[10],[11],[12],[13].

Les personnes à peau olive voient leur teint pâlir si leur exposition au soleil est limitée (fréquent en hiver). Cependant, la peau à teint olive bronze plus facilement que la peau claire et conserve généralement des sous-tons verdâtres ou jaunâtres marqués[14],[15],[16].

La peau olive correspond aux stades III, IV et V de l'échelle de Fitzpatrick .

Histoire

Le dictionnaire Oxford English Dictionary indique que le terme « olive » est utilisé pour décrire la couleur de peau depuis au moins le XVIIe siècle. La première citation connue se trouve dans les écrits du voyageur anglais Thomas Coryat, qui décrit l'empereur de l'empire moghol Jahangir[17].

Répartition géographique

La pigmentation de type III et IV est fréquente parmi les populations autour de la méditerranéenne et d'Asie de l'Ouest, ainsi que d'Asie de l'Est, d'Asie centrale et de certaines parties des Amériques. On la trouve également sporadiquement en Europe du Nord-Ouest, donnant à des groupes tels que les fameux « Black Irish »[18],[19],[1],[20],[21] leur coloration distinctive.

La pigmentation de type IV et V se rencontre notamment en Asie du Sud, Asie de l'Ouest, Asie du Sud-Est, Afrique du Nord et dans le sous-continent indien[22],[19],[3],[23],[24],[25],[26],[27].
