Le Sénat (en anglais : Senate) est la chambre haute du parlement bicaméral de Trinité-et-Tobago.

Composition

Les 31 sénateurs sont nommés par le Chef de l'État dont[2]:

  • 16 sur la recommandation du Premier ministre ;
  • 6 sur la recommandation du chef de l'opposition ;
  • 9 en raison de leurs compétences dans les domaines économique, social ou autres.

Élection

La durée du mandat est de cinq ans[2].

Éligibilité :

  • avoir 25 ans,
  • être citoyen de Trinité et Tobago.

Inéligibilité :

  • allégeance à un État étranger,
  • faillite non réhabilitée,
  • maladie mentale,
  • délit électoral,
  • condamnation à mort ou à une peine de prison supérieure à 12 mois.

Incompatibilités :

  • certaines fonctions publiques,
  • toute charge concernant l'organisation des élections.

Les membres du Gouvernement sont choisis parmi les sénateurs et les membres de la Chambre des représentants.

Les Président et Vice-président du Sénat ne sont pas en droit d'assumer les fonctions de ministre ou secrétaire parlementaire.
