Scanner d'empreintes digitales

Un AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System)[1] ou Système d'identification automatique par empreintes digitales est un système informatique permettant de réaliser des identifications (authentifications, recherches ouvertes) basées sur les empreintes digitales.

On distingue deux types d'AFIS : les AFIS policiers - premiers historiquement - et les AFIS civils.

AFIS Policiers

les AFIS policiers sont historiquement précurseurs sur les AFIS civils. ils servent à :

  • enregistrer des empreintes digitales dans une base de données :
    • fiches décadactilaires : empreintes prises lors de l'arrêt d'un criminel, création d'une fiche d'empreintes avec les dix doigts (roulés[Quoi ?] et plats) et depuis peu les paumes.
    • traces de scènes de crimes : empreintes récupérées grâce à des procédés scientifiques sur une scène de crime.
  • Confronter les empreintes entre elles :
    • empreintes décadactilaires contre d'autres décadactilaires (pour vérifier la présence d'un individu dans la base)
    • empreintes décadactilaires contre des traces de scènes de crimes (pour confondre les auteurs d'un crime)
    • traces contre traces (afin de relier des « affaires criminelles » entre elles)

AFIS civils

les AFIS civils, comme les systèmes policiers, sont composées d'une base de données et d'algorithmes de comparaison (matching) dans cette base.

On utilise les AFIS civils dans la gestion de documents numériques (cartes d'identité, passeports...).

Architecture d'un AFIS

Un AFIS est généralement composé d'au moins 3 sous parties :

  • La partie workflow, qui assure la gestion des requêtes des clients de l'AFIS (terminaux de signalisation, terminaux de vérification des empreintes, autre systèmes policiers, etc.)
  • La partie base de données, qui stocke les données des signalisations policières, les données des empreintes digitales, les données statistiques, les données des traitements en cours.
  • La partie Matching, ferme de calcul qui s'occupe de comparer les empreintes digitales.

Les AFIS peuvent être liés à un fichier policier préexistant qui stocke les données des signalisations. L'AFIS ne s'occupe alors plus des données texte pour ne s'occuper que des empreintes.

Les empreintes doivent être encodées dans une forme utilisable par le matcher. Cette fonction peut être dévolue au matcher, au poste utilisateur ou sur une partie du système dédiée. Les empreintes sont donc stockées simultanément sous deux formes : la forme brute, image issue du scanner de signalisation, et la forme encodées utilisée par le matcher.

AFIS dans le monde

  • Aux États-Unis: IAFIS (Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System) est le système utilisé par le FBI[2].
