Seersucker

Le seersucker^[1] est un tissu gaufré en coton d'origine indienne.

Description

Le seersucker consiste en une alternance de lignes bleues lisses et de lignes blanches gaufrées, obtenues en exerçant des tensions différentes sur le métier à tisser. Cette matière est surtout utilisée pour confectionner des vestes dont l'étoffe favorise la perte de chaleur et la circulation de l'air^[2].

Étymologiquement, le mot vient du perse « shir o shekar », traduit par « de lait et de sucre », faisant là référence à une probable ressemblance avec ces aliments, dont l'un est lisse et l'autre grossier^[2].

Histoire

Il est originaire d'Inde, où il était porté sur des habits de cérémonie avec de la soie ondulée, de l'or et de l'argent. Importé en Europe vers 1750, il est à la mode à la cour du roi de France Louis XV. Les Anglais le remettent au goût du jour au XX^e siècle en l'utilisant pour fabriquer des vêtements de régate ou de bord de mer. Il devient ensuite un élément vestimentaire important du Sud des États-Unis, étant encore de nos jours célébré le deuxième ou troisième jeudi de juin par les sénateurs américains originaires du sud du pays lors du « Seersucker Thursday », où ils viennent en séance avec des habits de cette matière^[2].
