Sainte Agnès fait référence à plusieurs saintes chrétiennes dont la plus célèbre est Agnès de Rome, et fait aussi penser à plusieurs bienheureuses.

Saintes catholiques et orthodoxes

Le rapprochement avec un agneau rappelle chez les chrétiens le sacrifice du Christ, pour son innocence, sa pureté, et sa douceur.

᾽Αγνή [agnè], est un adjectif grec, le latin a ajouté le s. Il s'agit d'un mot d'origine indo-européenne apparenté au latin agnus (agneau) et au grec ἀμνός [amnos < *abnos <*agwnos][3].

En 300 apr. J.-C., le peuple parlait encore le grec à Rome, où vivaient bien des étrangers. Agnê veut dire "pur", "net", "intègre" de corps et d'âme, donc pure, chaste. Dans les religions païennes comme chez les Juifs, c'était requis pour se mettre au service de la divinité ou lui offrir un sacrifice. Saint Ambroise nous a transmis son martyre, 70 ans après, et explique bien ce rapprochement : Agnès, pure de corps de d'âme a pu offrir à Dieu sa promesse de virginité et par le sacrifice de sa vie qu'elle a accepté.
