Le mot registre peut avoir plusieurs significations^[1], dont deux principales. Il peut être employé au sens d'outil de mémoire - on retrouve alors l'origine du verbe enregistrer dans la vie courante^[2] et par analogie en informatique (en-registrer). Il peut également être employé au sens de catégorie.

Dans le sens d'objet

En technologie

Registre de four : système de plaques permettant de régler le tirage d'un four ou d'une cheminée.
Désigne un dispositif mécanique propre aux orgues et clavecins, destiné à varier le timbre des sons émis. (Voir registre - pour orgue -).

En informatique

Registre (ou bascule), en électronique : une case mémoire. Voir aussi Registre à décalage.
Un registre de processeur est une mémoire très réduite et très rapide au sein d'un processeur.
Dans le domaine des réseaux et sur Internet :
- un registre de métadonnées est une organisation qui définit les métadonnées utilisables pour le partage de ressources Web entre les partenaires et les parties prenantes de programmes transversaux complexes ;

Au sens premier, un registre est un livre dans lequel sont consignés des chiffres, des noms, des faits dont on doit garder trace :

Registre, en cancérologie : un recueil d'informations (appelé plus précisément registre des cancers ou registre des tumeurs) sur l'occurrence géographique et temporelle d'un type de cancer ou de tous les cancers.

Dans le sens de catégorie

Registre (beaux-arts), dans les beaux-arts : un ensemble de motifs sur un même niveau horizontal, dans une sculpture ou une œuvre peinte.
Registre (musique), en musique : un ensemble de sons accessibles à un instrument ou à un chanteur.
Registre littéraire ou tonalité, en littérature.
Registre comique, au théâtre ou en société : un ensemble de formes et d'effets comiques propres à distraire et à amuser un public.

- Langue à registres, en phonologie et en typologie des langues : une langue utilisant la phonation susceptible d'établir des différences de sens.
- Registre de langue ou niveau de langue, en sociolinguistique : un niveau d'usage d'une catégorie linguistique, susceptible de varier entre le soigné et le relâché.
