Un raz (ou ras), mot d'origine normande issu du vieux norrois rás, désigne en français un courant de marée en Normandie et en Bretagne^{[Note 1]}. Il a la même origine que le mot anglais race signifiant « courant », « course » ^[1]^,^{[Note 2]}.

Il s'est figé en français dans le substantif « raz-de-marée » :
