Propédeutique : (1843) via l’allemand propädeutik, dérivé du grec ancien προπαιδεύω, propaideúô (« enseigner auparavant »), composé de πρό, pró (« avant ») et de παιδεύω, paideuô (« élever un enfant »).

Propédeutique peut désigner :

  • le caractère facilitateur d'un savoir ou d'un processus d'acquisition de savoirs pour l'acquisition de savoirs ultérieurs : jouer de la flûte à bec avant un autre instrument, apprendre l’espéranto avant une autre langue vivante ;
  • la période d’enseignements, mise en place dans certaines écoles, universités, séminaires, etc., visant à préparer l’élève pour de futurs enseignements, et visant à faciliter l’apprentissage ;
  • l'année de propédeutique, un an d'étude et de réflexion que font parfois les futurs séminaristes de l'Église catholique ;
  • l’ensemble des techniques d’examen utilisées lors d'un examen clinique en médecine humaine ou en médecine vétérinaire permettant de classer les signes anormaux qui seront ensuite interprétés. La propédeutique est alors la base de la démarche diagnostique ;
  • la première année d'études supérieures, préparatoire aux licences après le baccalauréat dans certaines universités en France, jusqu’en 1966. L'expression « faire sa propédeutique » était courante ;
  • la série d'examens de la fin de première année d'EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) ;
  • le premier travail de séminaire que doivent rédiger les étudiants de la Faculté de droit de Fribourg (Suisse), au terme de leur première année d'étude ;
  • les cours de rafraîchissement de la mémoire lors de la première année d'études supérieures. (Spécifique à la Belgique.) Ils ont pour but de familiariser l'étudiant avec le cycle supérieur en revoyant les matières vues en secondaire. Ces cours durent de deux à quatre semaines. Elle peut dans cette perspective être les cours de remise à niveau suivis par des étudiants afin de pouvoir entreprendre des études dans une nouvelle discipline ;
  • Propédeutique philosophique, en allemand Philosophische Propaedeutic, un ouvrage de Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel.
