En mathématiques, la parité a plusieurs significations selon le contexte :

en arithmétique élémentaire, la notion de parité est utilisée pour distinguer les nombres entiers en deux grandes familles : ceux divisibles par 2, les entiers pairs, et ceux qui ne le sont pas, les entiers impairs ;

en théorie des groupes, la parité d'une permutation est la parité (paire ou impaire) du nombre de transpositions dans lequel la permutation peut être décomposée. Par exemple (ABC) vers (BCA) est paire parce qu'elle peut être effectuée en permutant A et B, puis C et A (deux transpositions). Il peut être montré que si une permutation admet plusieurs décomposition différentes en transpositions, en revanche, la parité du nombre de transpositions impliquées ne dépend que de la permutation initialement considérée. La définition est donc valide. La parité permet de définir la signature d'une permutation ;

en analyse des fonctions d'une variable réelle, la parité d'une fonction décrit une propriété de changement de la valeur de la fonction lorsque l'argument est remplacé par son opposé. Une fonction f est paire si pour tout réel x, on a : f(x)=f(-x) ; une puissance paire d'une variable, ou la fonction cos sont des exemples de fonctions paires. Une fonction f est impaire si pour tout réel x, on a : -f(x)=f(-x) ; une puissance impaire d'une variable, ou la fonction sin sont des exemples de fonctions impaires. La fonction identiquement nulle est la seule fonction d'une variable réelle à la fois paire et impaire. Toute fonction se décompose uniquement comme la somme d'une fonction paire et d'une fonction impaire. La définition se généralise pour des fonctions à variables réelles ou à variables dans des groupes.
