Pape émérite ou pontife émérite[1] est le titre assumé par Benoît XVI, pape de l'Église catholique, du moment de sa démission de la charge de pontife romain, le , à sa mort, le .

Le titre de « pape émérite » n'est prévu par aucune législation de l'Église catholique.

Benoît XVI est le seul pape à avoir utilisé le titre de pape émérite après la renonciation au titre de souverain pontife[2].

Références normatives

Le canon 332 §2 du Code de droit canonique prévoit que le pontife romain peut renoncer à sa charge. Pour qu'elle soit valide, il faut que la renonciation soit faite librement et qu'elle soit dûment manifestée, il n'est pas nécessaire que quelqu'un l'accepte[3],[4],[5].

Bien qu'il n'ait pas été le premier pape à avoir renoncé à sa charge, le pape Benoît XVI a été en 2013 le seul pape à avoir présenté sa démission telle que régie par le canon 332, en vigueur depuis 1983[3],[6].

Titre

Le titre de « pape émérite », non prévu par le droit canon, fut préféré à celui d'évêque émérite de Rome et adopté par analogie, avec effet dès le début du siège vacant[1].

Dans la culture populaire

Le chanteur du groupe de heavy metal suédois Ghost, Tobias Forge, incarne depuis les débuts du groupe en 2010 une sorte d’antipape satanique nommé Papa Emeritus, évoluant au fil des albums en Papa Emeritus II, III, etc. Selon les musiciens du groupe, la démission de Benoît XVI enleva un peu de la magie du personnage[7].
