NGC 1228 est une lointaine et très vaste galaxie lenticulaire située dans la constellation de l'Éridan. Sa vitesse par rapport au fond diffus cosmologique est de 10 190 ± 38 km/s, ce qui correspond à une distance de Hubble de 150 ± 11 Mpc (∼489 millions d'al)^[1]. Elle a été découverte par l'astronome américain Francis Leavenworth en 1886.

Avec les galaxies NGC 1229, NGC 1230 et IC 1892, la galaxie NGC 1228 forme une chaine de galaxies qui figure dans l'atlas de Halton Arp sous la cote Arp 332^[3].

À ce jour, une mesure non basée sur le décalage vers le rouge (redshift) donne une distance d'environ 95,700 Mpc (∼312 millions d'al)^[5]. Cette valeur est très loin à l'extérieur des valeurs de la distance de Hubble. Notons cependant que c'est avec la valeur moyenne des mesures indépendantes, lorsqu'elles existent, que la base de données NASA/IPAC calcule le diamètre d'une galaxie.

↑ Les données utilisées par le site NASA/IPAC sont basées uniquement sur des publications scientifiques et, en ce qui concerne le diamètre des galaxies, elles sont parfois inexactes. Le calcul de tous les diamètres est basé sur la moyenne des mesures de distances indépendantes du décalage vers le rouge, lorsqu'elles existent. Certaines fois, l'écart type des échantillons est plus grand que la moyenne et souvent il vaudrait mieux choisir la distance de Hubble pour faire ce calcul. Ici par exemple, la seule mesure indépendante est de 97,7 Mpc et c'est probablement loin de la distance réelle de NGC 1228. Si on utilise la distance de Hubble de 150 Mpc, on obtient un diamètre d'environ 150,5 kpc (∼491 000 al) au lieu de 95,83 kpc indiqué sur le site.
