n8n GmbH (prononcé « n-eight-n », abréviation de « nodulation ») est une entreprise allemande, fondée à Berlin en 2019, d'édition de logiciels d'automatisation[2].

La plateforme n8n est un logiciel d'automatisation de workflow en no code / low-code (en), qui permet de connecter des applications entre elles. Elle propose un éditeur visuel et un langage graphique pour l'automatisation.

Histoire

La société n8n GmbH est fondée en 2019 à Berlin par Jan Oberhauser. La première version du logiciel est publiée en octobre de la même année[3],[4]. En , l'entreprise lève 1,5 million de dollars de capital d'amorçage mené conjointement par Sequoia Capital et firstminute capital[4]. En , elle lève 12 millions de dollars supplémentaires lors d'un tour de table de série A (en) mené par Felicis Ventures, avec la participation de Sequoia, firstminute et Harpoon[3].

En , la communauté de développeurs compte approximativement 16 000 personnes[3].

En , elle finalise un tour de table de série B de 55 millions d'euros (environ 60 millions de dollars) mené par Highland Europe, avec la participation de HV Capital et d'investisseurs historiques[5].

En , n8n lève 180 millions de dollars lors d'un tour de table de série C, portant la valorisation de l'entreprise à 2,5 milliards de dollars ; ce tour de table est mené par Accel avec la participation de Sequoia, Visionaries Club, Nvidia’s NVentures, Meritech Capital Partners (en), Redpoint Ventures (en), Evantic et Deutsche Telekom’s T. Capital[6].

Les investisseurs précédents, notamment Felicis Ventures, Sequoia, Highland Europe et HV Capital, participent également à des investissements de suivi[6].

En , la plateforme n8n permet d'interconnecter et d'intégrer des données et des fonctionnalités « entre plus de 350 applications existantes », tout en offrant la possibilité d'intégrer des services et des applications personnalisés utilisés au sein des organisations clientes[3].

Technologie

La plateforme n8n est implémentée à l'aide de Node.js et TypeScript[7]. Les flux de travail sont modélisés comme des graphes orientés de nœuds, pour l'exécution à grande échelle. Le mode file d'attente exécute des processus de travail qui consomment les tâches d'un courtier. Les variables de documentation et les variables d'environnement pour ce mode sont fournies pour les déploiements auto-hébergés. Elle est disponible en auto-hébergement[3],[8] et en Saas[4].

Licence

n8n décrit sa licence comme étant de type « fair-code », le code étant publié sous la Sustainable Use License (SUL) de l’entreprise. Elle précise que la SUL autorise l’utilisation, la modification et la redistribution avec des limitations spécifiques (par exemple, la restriction de l’utilisation à des fins commerciales internes). n8n indique avoir adopté la SUL en , remplaçant ainsi son ancien modèle Apache-2.0 + Commons Clause Model (en)[9] et « fair code » dans la programmation Dataflow (en)[3].
