Mark Gatiss est un acteur, scénariste et producteur de télévision britannique, né le à Sedgefield (Durham). Il est principalement connu pour ses rôles dans les séries Le Club des Gentlemen, Doctor Who, Sherlock et Game of Thrones.

Biographie

Carrière

Mark Gatiss est peut-être mieux connu comme acteur de la série comique Le Club des Gentlemen (avec les acteurs Reece Shearsmith, Steve Pemberton et le coauteur Jeremy Dyson)[1]. Après avoir gagné le Perrier Award au Edinburgh Festival Fringe en 1997, Le Club des Gentlemen est transféré sur la station BBC Radio 4 sous le nom On the Town with the League of Gentlemen, avant d'apparaitre à la télévision en 1999 sur la chaîne BBC Two et sur Comédie ! en France. Le film The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse est sorti en 2005.

Au début des années 2000, Mark Gatiss fait de nombreuses apparitions dans Les Allumés, dans In the Red (BBC Two, 1998), dans Nighty Night (BBC Three, 2003), et dans Miss Marple.

À partir de 2001, il écrit les scénarios de Little Britain et de Mon ami le fantôme, ainsi que quelques sketches comiques comme The Web of Caves, The Kidnappers ou The Pitch of Fear.

Mark Gatiss a écrit de nombreux scénarios notamment pour la série de science-fiction Doctor Who, notamment les épisodes Des morts inassouvis, L'Hystérique de l'étrange lucarne, La Victoire des Daleks et Terreurs nocturnes, Destruction mutuelle et Le Cauchemar écarlate pour la saison 7. De plus, il scripte la saison 2006 des making-of Doctor Who Confidential. Il apparait en 2007 dans la série en interprétant le Professeur Lazarus dans l'épisode L'Expérience Lazarus aux côtés de David Tennant dans la saison 3[2]. Il réapparait en endossant le costume de Gantok dans l'épisode de la saison 6 de 2011, Le Mariage de River Song aux côtés de Matt Smith.

Il scénarise la mini-série Crooked House qui a été diffusée en sur BBC Four[3], ainsi que trois épisodes de la série télévisée Hercule Poirot : Le Chat et les Pigeons (saison 11), Le Crime d'Halloween (saison 12) et Les Quatre (saison 13).

Cocréateur et coproducteur de la série Sherlock avec Steven Moffat, il y interprète depuis 2010 Mycroft Holmes et a écrit les épisodes Le Grand Jeu, Les Chiens de Baskerville et Le Cercueil vide. Gatiss a aussi joué dans de nombreuses pièces de théâtre. Il a par exemple joué, avec Catherine Tate, dans Season's Greetings de Alan Ayckbourn[4]. En 2010, il produit aussi un documentaire en trois parties pour la BBC intitulé A History of Horror, dans lequel il explore l'histoire du film d'horreur au cinéma[5].

Vie privée

Mark Gatiss est né le à Sedgefield en Angleterre. Il a grandi en face de l'hôpital psychiatrique Edwardian où ses deux parents travaillaient. Durant son enfance, Mark Gatiss était passionné par les aventures du Docteur dans la série Doctor Who, les films d'horreur et d'épouvante, les aventures de Sherlock Holmes et les fossiles. Toutes ces passions qu'il a développées pendant son enfance sont à l'origine de son œuvre[6].

Il est marié avec l'acteur Ian Hallard (en)[7] et a été désigné en 2010 comme la 38e personne homosexuelle la plus influente au Royaume-Uni dans la « liste rose » du The Independent on Sunday[8].
