En mathématiques, l'inégalité de Young pour la convolution est le théorème d'analyse fonctionnelle suivant, démontré pour la première fois par William Henry Young en 1912^[1] :

Soient $f$ dans l'espace $L p$ de Lebesgue et $g$ dans $L q$ et

${\frac {1}{p}}+{\frac {1}{q}}=1+{\frac {1}{r}}\quad {\text{avec}}\quad 1\leq p,q,r\leq \infty .$

Alors le produit de convolution $f\ast g$ appartient à $L r$ et

$\|f\ast g\|_{r}\leq \|f\|_{p}\|g\|_{q}.$

Démonstration^[2]

Notons $q':={\frac {q}{q-1}}$ l'exposant conjugué de $q$ (c.-à-d. que $1/ q + 1/ q' = 1$ ) et $h(x,y):=|f(x-y)|^{p/r}|g(y)|$ . Ainsi,

|f(x-y)g(y)|=h(x,y)|f(x-y)|^{p/q'}

donc, d'après l'inégalité de Hölder,

|f\ast g\left(x\right)|\leq \|h(x,\cdot )\|_{q}\|f(x-\cdot )^{p/q'}\|_{q'}=\|h(x,\cdot )\|_{q}\|f\|_{p}^{p/q'},

si bien que (en excluant le cas immédiat $r=\infty$ )

\|f\ast g\|_{r}\leq \|f\|_{p}^{p/q'}\left(\int \|h(x,\cdot )\|_{q}^{r}\,\mathrm {d} x\right)^{1/r}=\|f\|_{p}^{p/q'}\left(\int \left(\int h(x,y)^{q}\,\mathrm {d} y\right)^{r/q}\,\mathrm {d} x\right)^{1/r}.

Or d'après l'inégalité intégrale de Minkowski,

\left(\int \left(\int h(x,y)^{q}\,\mathrm {d} y\right)^{r/q}\,\mathrm {d} x\right)^{q/r}\leq \int \left(\int h(x,y)^{r}\,\mathrm {d} x\right)^{q/r}\,\mathrm {d} y=\int \|f(\cdot -y)\|_{p}^{pq/r}|g(y)|^{q}\,\mathrm {d} y=\|f\|_{p}^{pq/r}\|g\|_{q}^{q}.

On peut ainsi conclure :

\|f\ast g\|_{r}\leq \|f\|_{p}^{p/q'}\left(\|f\|_{p}^{pq/r}\|g\|_{q}^{q}\right)^{1/q}=\|f\|_{p}\|g\|_{q}.

Plus précisément^[3]^,^[4], pour des fonctions sur $\mathbb {R} ^{n}$ ,

\|f\ast g\|_{r}\leq c_{p,q}^{n}\|f\|_{p}\|g\|_{q}

,

avec $c_{p,q}:=A_{p}A_{q}/A_{r}$ et $A_{p}:={\sqrt {p^{1/p}/p'^{1/p'}}}$ pour $p,p'$ conjugués (donc A₁ = 1 mais si p, q > 1 alors c_p,q < 1).
