Five Miles Out est le septième album studio du musicien britannique Mike Oldfield. Il est paru le sur le label Virgin et fut produit par Mike Oldfield.

Oldfield s'entoure d'une bonne équipe de musiciens, tels que Carl Palmer à la caisse claire et Graham Broad à la batterie (qui intégrera plus tard le groupe Bleeding Hearts Band de Roger Waters). On retrouve aussi Morris Pert aux percussions, transfuge de Brand X, ainsi que Paddy Moloney des Chieftains aux uilleann pipes et Maggie Reilly au chant.

Notes et anecdotes

  • La structure de l'album reprend celle de Platinum, à savoir la face A qui se compose d'un instrumental long (bien que Platinum se décompose en quatre mouvements), et de plusieurs chansons sur la face B.
  • Contrairement à Platinum et QE2, Oldfield fait appel à des sonorités celtiques, surtout sur Taurus 2, avec l'usage des uilleann pipes par Paddy Moloney.
  • Bien que Taurus 2 soit considéré comme un instrumental, on peut y entendre des passages chantés par Maggie Reilly, ainsi qu'un chœur féminin.
  • Five Miles Out est le deuxième album où l'on entend Oldfield chanter, après Ommadawn; cependant, il modifie sa voix en utilisant un vocoder sur Orabidoo et Five Miles Out.
  • Le titre de l'album ainsi que les paroles de la chanson éponyme font référence à un épisode de la tournée d'Oldfield et de ses musiciens en Europe : lors d'un voyage à Barcelone, l'avion qui les transportait aurait été pris dans un violent orage qui aurait pu leur être fatal.
  • Carl Palmer joue la caisse claire dans la pièce Mount Teide avec, entre autres percussionnistes, Morris Pert.
