Englouti, ou Au fond de la baleine au Québec[1], (Whalefall) est un film américain réalisé par Brian Duffield et dont la sortie est prévue en 2026.

Il s'agit de l'adaptation du roman Whalefall (en) de Daniel Kraus (2023), qui co-écrit le scénario avec le réalisateur. Le film raconte l'histoire d'un plongeur (Austin Abrams) qui, à la recherche de la dépouille de son père (Josh Brolin), est avalé vivant par un grand cachalot et tente de s'échapper. Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy et Emily Rudd joue les rôles secondaires.

Genèse et développement

En , juste avant la publication du roman, la société de production Imagine Entertainment annonce en avoir acquis les droits d'adaptation cinématographique[3].

En , 20th Century Studios remporte les enchères pour la distribution du roman de Daniel Kraus et confie la réalisation et la co-écriture du scénario à Brian Duffield[4].

Attribution des rôles

Début , Austin Abrams est choisi pour le rôle principal[5] et Josh Brolin entre en négociation pour rejoindre la distribution à la fin de ce même mois[6]. La participation de ce dernier est confirmée en juin, au moment où celles d'Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy et Emily Rudd sont également annoncées[7].

Tournage

La production obtient un crédit d'impôts pour un tournage en Californie[8], lequel débute à Los Angeles le [7],[9]. La photographie est dirigée par Aaron Morton, qui a déjà travaillé avec Brian Duffield pour les films Traquée et Adolescence explosive. Certaines scènes sont tournées sur la péninsule de Monterey le [10].

Sortie

Whalefall devrait sortir aux États-Unis le 16 octobre 2026, distribué par 20th Century Studios[11].
