Sofia Goubaïdoulina compose Descensio en 1981 pour répondre à une commande du Ministère de la Culture[1]. L'œuvre est écrite pour trois trombones, trois percussionnistes, harpe et deux claviers[1]. Elle est dédiée à Piotr Mechtchaninov[1]. Elle est créée le à Paris[1].
