La bataille de Cassville fait partie de la campagne d'Atlanta durant la Guerre de Sécession. Elle se déroule le .

Le général sudiste Joseph E. Johnston tente de battre un corps d'armée nordiste mais est obligé de continuer sa retraite.

La situation militaire

L'armée sudiste recule devant les forces du général Sherman. Après la bataille d'Adairsville, les nordistes ont divisé leurs forces. Le général sudiste Joseph E. Johnston espère alors pouvoir écraser le corps de Schofield, isolé par la marche du reste de l'armée nordiste vers Kingston.

Nordistes

Elles sont sous le commandement du général Sherman.

Deux corps d'armée sont engagés. En premier lieu, le XXIIIe, celui de Schofield; c'est celui qui suit les confédérés. En second lieu, le corps de Hooker (XXe). Ce dernier vient de Kingston et arrivera en fin de journée. Sa 3e division, celle de Butterfield, s'emparera de la ville après un échange de tirs avec les sudistes en retraite.

Sudistes

Elles sont sous le commandement du général Joseph E. Johnston.

Il y a deux corps d'armée, ceux de Polk et de Hood. Chaque corps comprend trois divisions, chacune d'une quinzaine de régiments; chacun des corps dispose d'une douzaine de batteries d'artillerie.

Le combat

Les forces sudistes ont pris position sur les crêtes, à l'ouest de la ville. Le plan est de fixer les nordistes avec le corps de Polk, pour les attaquer sur leur flanc droit avec le corps de Hood.

Les unités de Polks sont embusquées au sortir du plateau de Gravelly. Ainsi placées, elles pourront fusiller les troupes nordistes lorsque celles-ci devront franchir le gué du "Two Run Creek" et les y arrêter.

Pendant ce temps, les unités de Hood doivent faire mouvement par le sud pour prendre de flanc les nordistes bloqués. Mais pendant sa manœuvre, Hood découvre des unités nordistes sur son propre flanc gauche. Il s'agit d'une partie de la cavalerie du général Edward M. McCook. Après quelques escarmouches, et craignant d'être tourné à son tour, Hood abandonne son mouvement pour se regrouper avec Polk.

Dans la nuit, les sudistes évacuent la ville pour gagner une position plus à l'est.
