En algèbre, l'anneau opposé^[1] A⁰ ou A^op d'un anneau A possède le même groupe additif sous-jacent que A et sa multiplication est effectuée dans l'ordre opposé : si l'on note $\cdot _{A}$ et $\cdot _{A^{\rm {op}}}$ les multiplications respectives de A et A^op, on a

a\cdot _{A^{\rm {op}}}b=b\cdot _{A}a

La notion d'anneau opposé permet d'unifier l'étude des modules à gauche et des modules à droite, car les modules à droite sur un anneau sont exactement les modules à gauche sur l'anneau opposé^[2].

Propriétés

A et A^op ont même zéro et (le cas échéant) même unité. L'égalité A = A^op a lieu si et seulement si A est commutatif. En particulier, si A est un corps, A^op aussi.

Si A est un corps gauche (également appelé anneau à division) qui n'est pas commutatif, l'anneau opposé de A est lui aussi un corps gauche non commutatif. Dans ce cas, on parle parfois du « corps opposé de A » plutôt que de « l'anneau opposé de A »^[3].

Toute K-algèbre A est isomorphe à l'opposée de la K-algèbre des endomorphismes du A-module A :

A\simeq \left({\rm {End}}_{A}(A)\right)^{\rm {op}}

Démonstration

Pour tout $a\in A$ , soit $r_{a}\in {\rm {End}}_{A}(A)$ défini par : $r_{a}(x)=x\cdot _{A}a$ . L'application $r_{a}$ est une bijection de $A$ dans ${\rm {End}}_{A}(A)$ , de bijection réciproque $f\mapsto f(1)$ . En effet, pour tout $f\in {\rm {End}}_{A}(A)$ , $r_{f(1)}(x)=x\cdot _{A}f(1)=f(x)$ . C'est un isomorphisme de $A^{\rm {op}}$ dans ${\rm {End}}_{A}(A)$ , le point essentiel étant que $(r_{a}\circ r_{b})(x)=x\cdot _{A}b\cdot _{A}a=x\cdot _{A}\left(a\cdot _{A^{\rm {op}}}b\right)=r_{a\cdot _{A^{\rm {op}}}b}(x)$ . Par conséquent, $A=(A^{\rm {op}})^{\rm {op}}\simeq \left({\rm {End}}_{A}(A)\right)^{\rm {op}}$ .
