Agent voyer est une fonction attribuée à une personne chargée de gérer les biens communaux, d'entretenir la voirie.

Histoire

Le voyer, en latin « viarius », est l’inspecteur des chemins[1]. C'est l'officier préposé à l’entretien des voies publiques sous l’Ancien Régime, qui prend ensuite le nom d’agent voyer au XIXe siècle (et d'architecte-voyer dans les villes)[2].

En France, les agents voyers sont des fonctionnaires dépendant du Ministère de l'Intérieur et responsables de la construction et de l'entretien des chemins vicinaux. Il y aurait eu 3 500 techniciens ou ingénieurs, recrutés localement et organisés en agence départementale placée sous l'autorité du préfet depuis 1836 et du Conseil général depuis 1867. Ces agents voyers peuvent, moyennant rémunérations accessoires, travailler pour le compte des municipalités. La route ou grande voirie dépend du Ministère des Travaux publics[3].

Avec alignement, voyer appartient au langage de l’aménagement urbain avant l’apparition du mot urbanisme[4].

  • Architecte voyer de la Ville de Paris : corps d'architectes existant depuis 1895 et recrutés par concours de la fonction publique territoriale. Il existe à ce jour 70 architectes voyers (dont 24 femmes) exerçant dans différentes directions de la ville de Paris[5]
