Vulcano on tuliperäinen saari Tyrrhenanmeressä Sisilian pohjoispuolella. Se on eteläisin Liparisaarista, ja sen pinta-ala on 21 neliökilometriä. Vulcano kuuluu Liparin kuntaan ja Messinan metropolikaupunkiin.[2]

Vulcanon saari on noin neljä kilometriä leveä ja luode-kaakko-suunnassa kahdeksan kilometriä pitkä. Se on muodostunut kolmesta tulivuorenhuipusta, Vulcanellosta, Gran Crateresta ja Monte Ariasta. 391 metriä korkea Gran Cratere on edelleen aktiivinen, ja Monte Aria on 500 metriä korkeana saaren korkein huippu. Vulcanello on näistä pienin, ja sen yhdistää muuhun saareen 200 metriä leveä hiekkainen kannas.[2] Gran Crateren viimeinen suuri purkaus on tapahtunut vuosina 1888–1890, mutta sen fumaroleista on sen jälkeen purkautunut jatkuvasti rikkipitoisia kaasuja.[3]

Vulcanon saarella asuu noin 450 ihmistä, ja he saavat leipänsä maanviljelystä ja matkailusta.[4] Vulcanon saaresta tulee moniin kieliin tulivuorta tarkoittava sana, sillä antiikin aikana se tunnettiin Vulkanuksen tai kreikkalaisittain Hefaistoksen pajana. Tulivuoresta nouseva savu viittasi Vulkanuksen olevan työssään.[5] Saari oli aktiivisen tulivuoritoimintansa takia pitkään asumatomana, ja vakituisesti se asutettiin vasta varsin myöhään. Sieltä kuitenkin etsittiin jo aiemmin luonnonvaroja, alunaa, rikkiä ja puutavaraa.[4]
