Vittorio Rieti

Vittorio Rieti (28. tammikuuta 1898 Aleksandria – 19. helmikuuta 1994 New York) oli italialaistaustainen, Yhdysvaltain kansalaisuuden saanut säveltäjä.[1]

Rieti opiskeli Giuseppe Frugattan johdolla Milanossa vuosina 1912–1917. Hän suoritti myös taloustieteen opintoja ja valmistui Milanon yliopistosta vuonna 1917.[2][1] Rieti palveli lyhyesti Italian armeijassa ensimmäisessä maailmansodassa. Sodan päätyttyä hän jatkoi Roomassa[2] musiikkiopintojaan Alfredo Casellan johdolla.[1] Orkestroinnissa Rieti sai ohjausta Ottorino Respighiltä.[2] Hänen varhaisimmat teoksensa olivat tyyliltään kokeellisia ja saivat osakseen Arnold Schönbergin huomion. Schönberg auttoi Rietiä kustannussopimuksen saamisessa Universal Editionin kanssa.[1]

1920-luvun alkupuolella Rieti muodosti Renzo Massaranin ja Mario Labrocan kanssa I Tre -nimisen säveltäjäryhmän. Ensimmäisen kansainvälisen menestyksensä hän saavutti ISCM:n festivaalilla Prahassa vuonna 1924 konsertollaan puhallinsoittimille ja orkesterille. Se esitettiin Casellan johdolla.[2] Rieti liittyi vuonna 1925 Pariisissa Sergei Djagilevin Ballets russes'n henkilökuntaan. Hän oli tähän mennessä jo siirtynyt lähemmäs Igor Stravinskyn tyyliä muistuttavaa uusklassismia. Stravinskysta tulikin hänen läheinen ystävänsä.[1] Rietin Djagileville säveltämistä baleteista erityisen menestyksekkääksi osoittautui Barabau. Rieti sävelsi näyttämöteoksia myös Louis Jouvet'n teatterille Pariisiin. 1930-luvulla hän oli yksi modernille kamarimusiikille omistetun La Sérénade -ryhmän perustajista.[2]

Rieti pakeni toista maailmansotaa[1] Yhdysvaltoihin vuonna 1940 ja sai maan kansalaisuuden vuonna 1944. Yhdysvalloissa hänen musiikkiinsa teki koreografioita George Balanchine. Hänen orkesteriteostensa esityksiä johtivat muiden muassa Arturo Toscanini ja Dimitri Mitropoulos.[2] Stravinskysta poiketen Rieti alkoi menettää suosiotaan 1950-luvulta lähtien. Hän kuitenkin jatkoi säveltämistä kuolemaansa saakka.[1] Rieti opetti sävellystä Peabody Institutessa vuosina 1948–1949, Chicago Musical Collegessa 1950–1953, Queens Collegessa 1955–1960 ja New York College of Musicissa 1961–1964.[2] Rietin tuotantoon kuuluu balettien lisäksi seitsemän oopperaa, yksitoista sinfoniaa, yksitoista jousikvartettoa, pianokappaleita, lauluja, kamariteoksia ja kuoromusiikkia.[1]
