Triaskauden joukkotuho

Trias-jurakauden rajalta eivät kaikki lajit selvinneet hengissä.

Triaskauden joukkotuho eli trias-jurakauden joukkotuho oli eliökuntaa noin 200 miljoonaa vuotta sitten kohdannut katastrofi, joka tuhosi monia maalla eläviä matelijoita ja suuria sammakkoeläimiä. Se tapahtui trias- ja jurakausien taitteessa ja oli yksi kaikkien aikojen suurimmista joukkotuhoista.

Hävinneet eliöt

Kaikki suuret Cruotarsi-matelijat krokotiileja lukuun ottamatta hävisivät. Samoin tuhoutuivat monet vielä jäljellä olevista terapsideista, nisäkäsmäisistä matelijoista, ja useimmat suuret sammakkoeläimet.

Merieläinheimoista tuhoutui 20 % ja suvuista 55 %, melkein yhtä paljon kuin liitukauden lopun joukkotuhossa. 23 % kaikista heimoista 48% kaikista suvuista hävisi.

Puolet silloisesta lajistosta kuoli sukupuuttoon.lähde? Joukkotuho avasi kuivalle maalle ekologisia lokeroita dinosaurusten kehitykselle. Merieläinten tuho oli melko nopea.

Asteroiditörmäys vai tulivuorenpurkaus

Kerrostumista on löydetty äkillinen iridiumpitoisuuden nousu[1][2], joka liittyy suureen asteroiditörmäykseen, mutta itse törmäyskraatteria ei ole löydetty. Suureen asteroiditörmäykseen liittyvät tuhoava räjähdys, kuuman kaasun aalto, kivisade, maanjäristys ja mahdollisia jättimäisiä hyökyaaltoja. Törmäys saattaa myös laukaista suuren tulivuorenpurkauksen. Törmäyksen ilmakehään nostattama aine estää auringonsäteiden pääsyn maan pinnalle ja aiheuttaa ydintalven.

Toisaalta hiilen isotoopit viittaavat pidempiaikaiseen eliöstöä tuhoavaan häiriöön, jonka syynä voivat olla jättimäiset tulivuorenpurkaukset[3]. Noin 200 miljoonaa vuotta sitten jättimanner Pangean hajoamiseen liittyvät valtavat Keski-Atlantin tulivuorenpurkaukset (engl. CAMP) alkoivat. Ne tapahtuivat noin 5000x2500 km suuruisella alueella, joka ulottui Espanjasta ja Ranskasta Länsi-Afrikkaan ja läntiseen Pohjois-Amerikkaan. Afrikka ja Eurooppa olivat tuolloin lähellä Pohjois-Amerikkaa.

Joidenkin tietojen mukaan trias-jura-joukkotuho tapahtui noin 10 000 vuotta sen jälkeen, kun Pangean hajoamiseen liittyvät tulivuorenpurkaukset alkoivat Keski-Atlantilla. Purkausten aiheuttaman lämpötilaa nostavan hiilidioksidimäärän noususta on vain joitain viitteitä, varmaa se ei ole. On teoriassa mahdollista, että purkaukset olisivat aiheuttaneet pimentävän talven rikkihappopisaroiden avulla.

Trias-jurakauden rajasta käytettyjä lyhenteitä ovat mm. T/J boundary, TrJB tai TJB.

Suuret teropodi-dinosaurukset ilmestyivät Pohjois-Amerikkaan alle 10000 vuodessa tuhon jälkeen. Dinosaurukset monimuotoistuivat huomattavasti 100 000 vuoden kuluessa joukkotuhosta.[4]
