Therion on 1980-luvulla perustettu ruotsalainen sinfonista metallia esittävä yhtye. Yhtyeen kokoonpano on muuttunut paljon vuosien aikana, ja ainoana pysyvänä jäsenenä on ollut kitaristi Christofer Johnsson. Keikoilla yhtyeen mukana on tavan takaa kulkenut joukko oopperalaulajia. Kokoonpano on nähty myös Suomessa.

Yhtyeen nimen Therion Johnsson keksi suurimman musiikillisen vaikuttajansa Celtic Frostin kenties suosituimman levyn To Mega Therionin nimestä.

Christoffer Johnsson perusti yhtyeen vuonna 1987 Tukholman lähistöllä nimellä Blitzkrieg. Alkuvaiheen vaikutteita olivat Slayer ja Metallica ja yhtye hajosi vuonna 1988. Johnsson sai vaikutteita Celtic Frostista ja keikkaili nimellä Megatherion, jolloin yhtye kuulosti enemmän death metalilta. Nimeksi vaihtui Therion, jolloin yhtye äänitti kaksi demoa, yhden mini-LP:n ja yhden täyspitkän LP-levyn. Kolmanneksi demoksi laskettava vuonna 1990 julkaistu Time Shall Tell sai yhtyeelle sopimuksen Deaf Recordsille, jonka kautta yhtye julkaisi albumin Of Darkness vuonna 1991.[1][2]
