The Encyclopedia Cthulhiana: A Guide to Lovecraftian Horror on Daniel Harmsin kirjoittama Cthulhu-tarustoa käsittelevä tietosanakirja, jonka ensimmäinen laitos ilmestyi 1994 ja laajennettu toinen laitos 1998.[1] Teoksen esipuhe käsittelee H. P. Lovecraftin ja hänen seuraajiensa tuotantoa taide- ja aatehistoriallisesta näkökulmasta.[2] Varsinaiset hakusanat sen sijaan on kirjoitettu fiktion näkökulmasta, ikään kuin se olisi totta.[3] Lopun liitteissä esitellään Cthulhu-taruston kuvitteellinen maailmanhistorian aikajana sekä Necronomiconin sisältöä ja vaiheita.[4] Aikajanat on laatinut Shannon Appel.[5]

Kirjan julkaisi Cthulhu kutsu -roolipelin kustantaja Chaosium, ja mukana on ohjeet Encyclopedia Cthulhianan käyttämisestä roolipeleissä.[6] Toiseen laitokseen on merkitty, ovatko hakusanojen taustatiedot peräisin kaunokirjallisuudesta vai roolipeleistä.[1]

Vastaanotto

Dragon-lehden aikalaisarviossa kirjan tekijät saivat kehuja ”liki yli-inhimillistä” uutteruutta osoittavasta taustatyöstään.[7] Vuonna 1995 se voitti Origins Award -palkinnon.[8]

Michael Burgessin ja Lisa R. Bartlen Reference Guide to Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror (2002) kehuu The Encyclopedia Cthulhianaa hyväksi oppaaksi oppaana Cthulhu-tarustoon mutta pitää kirjallisuusluetteloa pettymyksenä, sillä se kertoo vain kirjailijan ja teoksen nimen sekä julkaisuvuoden, mutta ei tarkempia julkaisutietoja. Lisäksi kirjaa lukiessa on välillä vaikea erottaa tosimaailman tietoa kuvitteellisesta, vaikka Harms onkin merkinnyt osan tosimaailmaa koskevista huomautuksista sulkeisiin.[1]
