Sullan toinen sisällissota

Sullan toinen sisällissota käytiin antiikin Roomassa Lucius Cornelius Sullan ja konsuli Gaius Mariuksen kesken vuonna 83 eaa. Konsuli Sulla oli poistunut pääkaupungista, kun Rooman hallitsemalla Deloksen saarella oli käynnissä Mithridateen sota Roomaa vastaan. Sulla voitti sodan ja kukisti kapinallisten puolelle menneen Ateenan. Sullan kilpailija Marius anasti samaan aikaan vallan pääkaupungissa ja liittoutui konsuli Lucius Cornelius Cinnan kanssa. Kaupungissa olleet Sullan kannattajat saivat kokea kovia. Marius valittiin seitsemännen kerran konsuliksi, mutta kesken konsulikautensa hän kuoli. Cinna jatkoi konsulikauttaan useiden vuosien ajan kutsumatta kansankokousta koolle.[1]

Sulla oleskeli pitkään Ateenassa, josta ryöstettiin arvoesineitä Roomaan. Kun hän kuuli, että myös Cinna oli surmattu ja valta joutunut ääriaineksille (konsuliksi Mariuksen poika, joka surmautti useita senaattoreita), Sulla palasi sotajoukkoineen vuonna 83 eaa. Aikaisempi liittolaissota vaikutti niin, että itaaliset kansat vastustivat Sullaa. Koska konsuleita ei ollut elossa, Sulla pakotti senaatin antamaan hänelle diktaattorin valtuudet. Sulla joutui sotimaan eri puolilla niemimaata, mutta voitti taistelut. Hän kosti ankarasti kapinallisille, erityisesti samnilaisille.[1]
