Studs Terkel vuonna 2007

Louis ”Studs” Terkel (16. toukokuuta 1912 – 31. lokakuuta 2008) oli yhdysvaltalainen kirjailija, historioitsija ja radiotoimittaja. Hänen omaa radio-ohjelmaansa The Studs Terkel Programia esitettiin Chicagossa vuodesta 1952 vuoteen 1997. Terkel syntyi New Yorkissa, muutti 10-vuotiaana Chicagoon ja valmistui Chicagon yliopistosta. Hän sai lempinimensä James T. Farrellin fiktiiviseltä hahmolta Studs Loniganilta.

Terkelin ensimmäinen kirjajulkaisu Giants of Jazz ilmestyi vuonna 1956. Hän kirjoitti sille useita seuraajia, joista suurin osa käsittelee yhdysvaltalaisten historiaa. Terkel valittiin vuonna 1997 Yhdysvaltain taide- ja kirjallisuusakatemian jäseneksi. Korkeasta iästään huolimatta hän toipui hyvin vielä elokuussa 2005 tehdystä avosydänleikkauksesta. Syksyllä 2007 ilmestyi hänen muistelmateoksensa Touch and Go.

Terkel voitti Pulitzerin 1985 teoksestaan The Good War sekä Thomas Merton -palkinnon vuonna 1998. Hänen teoksistaan on suomennettu American Dreams: Lost and Found nimellä Amerikkalaisia unelmia (1983). Hän oli kuollessaan 96-vuotias. Hänet nimettiin postuumisti Radio Hall of Fameen vuonna 2009.[1]

Terkel näytteli sivuosaa John Saylesin vuoden 1988 elokuvassa Lahjotut (Eight Men Out)[2].

Peter von Bagh ja Atte Blom tekivät Terkelistä 1970-luvun keskivaiheilla viisiosaisen radiodokumentin, joka perustui osin von Baghin vuonna 1974 tekemään Terkelin haastatteluun.[3] Peter von Baghin käsikirjoitukseen ja ohjaukseen perustui myös Ylen Radioateljeen Terkelistä kertova radiodokumentti Maa joka voisi olla (2009)[4].
