Spirit (yhtye)

Spirit oli vuonna 1967 perustettu yhdysvaltalainen rock-yhtye. Sen musiikkia voi luonnehtia lähinnä psykedeeliseksi rockiksi, jossa oli myös jazz- ja hard rock -vaikutteita. Yhtyeen tunnetuimmat jäsenet olivat kitaristi-laulaja Randy California (oik. Randy Craig Wolfe) ja rumpali Ed Cassidy, joka oli samalla Randy Californian isäpuoli. Muita alkuperäiskokoonpanon jäseniä olivat laulaja-lyömäsoittaja Jay Ferguson, basisti Mark Andes ja kosketinsoittaja John Locke.

Spiritin kaksi ensimmäistä albumia, vuonna 1968 julkaistut Spirit ja The Family That Plays Together, saavuttivat menestystä nousten top-40:een. Spirit-kappaleen "Taurus" väitetään antaneen vaikutteita Led Zeppelinin kuuluisaan hittiin "Stairway to Heaven". 14. kesäkuuta 2016 joutuvat Jimmy Page ja Robert Plant Los Angelesissa oikeuteen syytettyinä tästä plagioinnista. Kaksikko kuitenkin välttyi tuomiolta.[1]

Toisen albumin aikainen oli Spiritin top-30-hitti "I Got a Line on You".[2] Vuonna 1970 julkaistu yhtyeen neljäs albumi Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus ei ilmestyttyään menestynyt yhtä hyvin, mutta nykyisin se on rockhistorian harrastajien keskuudessa kovin kiitelty. Alkuperäinen Spirit hajosi vuonna 1972, jolloin Mark Andes ja sittemmin myös Randy California erosivat yhtyeestä. Yhtye jatkoi vielä jonkin aikaa toimintaansa Ed Cassidyn johdolla. Vuonna 1974 Cassidy ja California perustivat Spiritin uudestaan. Yhtye toimi vaihtelevalla kokoonpanolla vuoteen 1979. Vuonna 1982 Spiritin alkuperäiskokoonpano palasi yhteen. Yhtye jatkoi toimintaansa Randy Californian soolouran rinnalla aina vuoteen 1997, jolloin California sai surmansa surffausonnettomuuden yhteydessä.

Spiritin vaikutusta suomalaiseen rockmusiikkiin

Suomessa Spirit ei ole ollut kovin tunnettu muusikkopiirien ulkopuolella, mutta muun muassa Kingston Wallin basisti Jukka Jylli on joissakin haastatteluissa maininnut Spiritin yhdeksi lempiyhtyeistään. Albert Järvinen on maininnut Randy Californian yhdeksi suosikkimuusikokseen. Hän on myös levyttänyt Californian kappaleen "I Don't Want Nobody" (levyllä Patchy Moss – 30 Big Ones). Ile Kallio on levyttänyt Spiritin kappaleen "I Got a Line on You" levylleen IRock. Wigwam on levyttänyt kappaleen "Fresh Garbage" levylle Fresh Garbage – Rarities 1969-1977 (julkaissut Love Records/Siboney vuonna 2000).
